Title: Cat and a Doxie?????
Post by: papbouv on August 04, 2008, 10:43:32 PM
Patches does not like cats Buddy was raised with a cat at his breeders. We have a Cement Block factory behind our house it covers the whole block from one end to the other it is huge. They have stacks & stacks of the cement blocks sitting all around they also have all kinds of wild life feral cats, fox, bats, hawks, & not telling what else is over there.Usually in the winter time we have mice we have an old house built in the 1940's so mice get in. We at present have a mouse saw it this morning guess they come in to get out of the heat it was 103* with a heat index of 107* today we are under a heat alert so far 2 people have died opened up cooling stations. Anyway back to the mouse problem I try to be a responsible pet owner out front is a busy street so really would not want an outside cat that came and out would be a inside cat. We also have a small house I think its 900 sq feet if I were to get a cat to help with the mouse problem what if Patches would not tolerate it???? Would there be away to teach Patches to get along with a cat???Patches is about 2 1/2 years old. Also I should say Hubby LOVES cats allot the cat box was getting to me cleaning it out when my disk was herniated in my back doing some better we did take in a stray cat before we got Patches she was a very super fat cat I tried every diet cat food she was ill and I finely Put the Cat to sleep she was peeing buckets of pee + peeing on the floors I think she had a major kidney problem & that is why she was dumped in the first place.Whom ever dumped her did not have the guts to do the right thing by her she was an old cat too. Sorry got side tracked again just wondering about getting a cat with Patches not liking Cats????Any advise would help me make a better decision Thanks ahead of time.

I think your best bet would be starting with kitten. Maybe that way, Patches won't realize she has a C A T in her house...

I have five cats but they were all strays and not kittens when I brought them into our home.  It was a little rough about the first week (the dogs were chasing them around the house).  But remember, a cat can always get away from a dog.  I have my cats set up in my basement with all their beds, litter boxes and food and it works out well.  They always come upstairs with us and sit on their window boxes and interact with the dogs every day.  Every once in a while one of my pups may chase a cat or two around the house.  After about the first week, the dogs and cats all seemed to get along and tolerated each other pretty well.

I have three cats, but all three of my dogs were brought in as puppies to grow with the cats.  They still chase occasionally, but when they catch them, the dogs just give the cats a poke with their nose like "Hey, keep running, that was fun!"  The nice thing is, now I can bring in strange cats and the dogs don't react much.  Same with the cats.  They are used to the dogs, so when I bring in another dachshund or small dog, they don't care.
