Title: Porky's allergies flare up...Again!!
Post by: doxielady5569128 on July 22, 2008, 10:16:59 AM
Porky needs extra rays today. He woke up at 5 am scratching and crying because his allegies are really bothering him today.    I gave him an oatmeal bath to calm down the itching and then he seemed to be doing better.   Then at 8 am he started screaming. I have never seen him that panicked before.   I checked him all over and noticed his ears were lumps on top of lumps and he cried when i touched them.   I immediately called the vet and told them he had the hives.

They told me to give him a dose of benedryl and  keep an eye on him.  They said he should be okay but not to let him eat until tomorrow morning.   We suspect its his food again.   Since the hives appeared right after eating.     They also told me the hives could last a few hours or a few days.    :doah:  Porky is sleeping right now and his ears don't seem to be as swollen or painful as they were.   He still has a few lumps but most of the bigger ones have gone away.

If his symptoms get worse we will be taking him in and he will have to be on a steroid for a few days to clear it up.  As before, I would hate to have to give him that medication.  Porky is definately in need of rays today.

Poor Porky hope he will feel better soon, have you asked the vet about having a Eppy Pen on hand in case his Hives interfer with his breathing might buy you time to get to the vet in case of an emergency????

I think the bumps on Porky's ears are not itchy hives, but an itchy heat rash.  The weird bumps went away last night in the evening once it cooled down and Porky seemed to be feeling LOTS better.   Also the inside of his ears are all gunky like when he has an ear infection. So...Im thinking he has another ear infection and the bumps may be from the heat or a fever.   I really don't know.  The benedryl does seem to help for a few hours and then he's itchy again.  If he still is having problems by Friday, he's going to the vet.  Unfortunately that's the earliest they could see him.

Thanks for the article Karen!!  Once I get my internet to connect long enough to read it, I definately will check it out!!   We'll keep you all posted on how he is doing.

Poor Porky.  Maddie and I can relate, believe me.  At least the Roo doesn't have hives.  Good grief!!  I was talking to a neighbor who has a Westie that has horrible allergies, especially in the Summer.  Seems this area is ripe for nasty pollens.  Well, my neighbor said that his vet said that Tavist D (I think that's what it's called) worked for Edgrrrrrr where Benedryl didn't make any difference.  I'm going to ask my vet the next time we see him for a Maddie followup in about 10 days about that because Benedryl doesn't seem to faze her much.

Porky, be brave and let your mommy clean your ears.  Better days are coming, buddy.  Hang on and RAYS to you.

Poor guy!  How's he feeling now?

Have you tried different foods with him?

I have one with allergies and one thing I found that helped when mine got rashes was something called CalmCoat.  It's all natural oils and really does help.  Mine has food allergies and environmental allergies, so I know how hard it is to see your pupper not feeling well like your Porky.

Well, Porky's hives have gone away now and he seems to be feeling much better!!   :apls:  It wasn't his food causing it because he ate his food again this morning with no problems.

I think we found the culprit.  My dad informed me that Porky ate some C-A-T food when he fed the cat on monday morning.   The C-A-T food has chicken in it which we know causes Porky major problems.   The last time he ate food with chicken in it he had hives for a week, itchy ears and feet, and got  tummy issues from it for a month!   Since Porky is back to himself this morning, I'm really hoping that's what it was.   :xfinger:

We really hope the Roo's allergies get better!!   It is awful to see them so miserable and itchy!  There is a shampoo we used on our britany spaniel when I was 13 for her allergies called "histacalm" that really seemed to help her.   You might try it on Miss Roo, Ask your vet to see if they even make it anymore and if it might help her.

I know I went through the same thing with Tuttle. The hives, the screaming, itchy the whole thing. It was an allergy to chicken. Once I made sure the food we get for him has absolutely no chicken he hasn't had them since. It was scary the first time because the hive got so bad his whole head swelled up. But just in case I keep the children's benedryl on hand!! Glad to hear the he is feeling better. He must have been so miserable! I am still sending rays though that they stay away from him and he gets back to his ol self!!

Porky is still doing pretty well today!   :apls:  He didn't have any itchy spots today at all.  I have been keeping him from spending alot of time outside and it is keeping him from sneezing and wheezing. His hives are completely gone now and he seems back to his normal self.  He is a little more tired than usual, but I think he's just bored.  He likes to spend time in the sun every morning outside and go for his two hour walks.  We are going to do our walking again tomorrow and see how he does.    :xfinger:   He and I both miss that!

Thank you all for your help!!!   We'll let you know if he has any more flare ups this summer.   This has been a very bad year for allergies here.  A lot of people are having problems and our vet said he has had lots of pets come in with hives, etc....
