Title: Auggie is down...
Post by: Paul Coover on July 10, 2008, 11:15:15 AM
Well, you hope it never happens, and you are never really prepared for it, but I didn't even think of it when Auggie was hobbling around limping yesterday afternoon. Then, suddenly, he is dragging both of his back legs.

Now, we have 2 downed dogs and we have one that recovered from being down, but this is the first time that we have ever had a dog go down on us. Of course, he is on crate rest, and I know all of the proper advice as I have given it thousands of times. But, man, it just stinks!

So, everyone keep good thoughts in their minds for our Auggie, who will be 13 next month. Hopefully he will recover and be OK, but if not, we do have Johanna's old wheelchair cart! Go figure!

Big time PRAYERS for Auggie thats for sure..
We are somewhat new Dachshund owners.. only a year and a half.. we just love these dogs.... so much character... such characters
Just it is so scary hearing about all the back problems they have... is there any other dog that suffers as much as a Doxie? :dontknow:

Oh man Paul I SO hate to hear that. It is sooooo hard to go through something like that. Many prayers and rays coming to little Auggie and to his parents to get through this tough time. Is surgery an option? Keep us posted!

TPoof oh yeah there are breeds with worse stuff for sure. It's just that our doxies suffer more from the dang back problems than all other breeds put together! You'd think that would tell us something about going too extreme with their genetics but I doubt that will ever change.  I had a Great Dane with tons of health problems and only lived to 6 and breeds like the Danes and other giant breeds, also Cavalier King Charles spaniel etc suffer from a myriad of problems. Most breeds have their "things" to bear. It's really tragic they live such a short time and can suffer from so many health problems to boot. After I lost my last doxie I swore NO MORE DOGS but I was so miserable without one, 4 years later along came Hallie and I am so glad I caved. But honestly, if I even survive losing her one day, I doubt I'll ever have a dog again and definitely not a doxie, it is just so heart wrenching when they are ill and then you lose them, I think I'd rather be miserable without a dog than having to watch my baby suffer, I cant' imagine having anyone but Hallie anyway. Life is hard that way!  :dontknow:

Auggie is not in pain, and other than his legs not working he is his usual self.

Auggie is doing well so far. He can pee and poop on his own, and he is sill eating and drinking well. He has even been able to start to wag his tail, which is a good sign!

I am happy to report that Auggie is doing very well. He has finished 6 weeks of crate rest and he can walk well on his own. So, he is now free to walk around the house on his own. Yesterday he got to go outside for the first time in 6 weeks. He was quite excited!
