Title: Re-assuring words from the surgeon
Post by: Leslie on July 02, 2008, 03:41:49 PM
she sez the little hind end waddle may be caused by the post surgical pain--yes, even in neck surgery.  She said some dogs require anti-inflams for the entire 6-8 week post op period.  As long as she passes the hind foot test, (lift up and back and they return it to normal position) all okay.  The calcification is found in 90% of all dachshunds and yes, they flare up now and again.  The exact source of her discomfort cannot be pinpointed, obviously with $1,000 more in tests and even that might be inconclusive. (you all know this, of course.)  So, more crate time, more Metacam, more time, more intermittent nail biting...(hi Dee Dee!)

Well that is encouraging though to know it is normal! Gads until this year I had no idea it is THAT hard to diagnose something...but it sure is! I hate not knowing egg-zactly what is going on in those little bodies. I had a 45 min disucssion with our local vet today on just that, she trying to convince me that it's not as important to diagnose it as long as you treat it, me saying yeahbutt....I NEED to know so I'm sure I'm treating it right and what to sort of expect later on. She saying, why do you want to know if it's bad you will be miserable if it's good you could still walk out the door and be hit by a bus anyway. Sigh. We of course all just want to hear everything will heal and be OK and we can be free of all this worry!

Guess that is why a large portion of my pay check is going to a behavioral anxiety clinic now (for me not Hallie!  Although she comes along. I knew we would have a lot of enlightening to do to the guy when he asked if she slept indoors or out at night...I don't think he has any idea of what he is dealing with yet lol.)

It really does suck how fast our kids age and how many problems they get!!! Hang in there Les Loki will be free and fine in no time!!

Enlightening may be an understatement here. It'll be interesting to see if he is one who understands those of us who consider our pets our children. I have a feeling you will be setting him straight on that. This could be an interesting experience for you!  Of course, do remember, if he isn't the right person for this job, you can always get someone else who understands you and Hallie better. Hopefully, he will come around. It could just take him a little while to "get it".
