Title: The Adventures Of Ima-Dora-Belle!
Post by: Doxherding Karen on June 24, 2008, 06:03:50 AM
 Well, trust it to rescuers to be sensitive to an adopted dachshund's feelings and to put a collar on a dachshund that is so comfortable and non-binding and non-threatening, that Miss Ima promptly walks out of it this morning and takes off running.  She may be chunky, but that girl can pump those little legs!

It's 5:15 in the morning.  Guinness wakes up for a "make break" so I figure Ima can come along and relieve herself.  We go outside, the three of us and Guinness promptly starts his sniffing.  Ima stands next to me, then before I can say, "Go Potty" she backs up out of her collar and starts walking off. I start after her, calling sweetly (I know the drill), Guinness makes a pee, Ima revs up into second gear, I start jogging, Guinness makes a poop, Ima's in third at a full skedaddle and I'm in big trouble.  This is dejà vu of Cooper-Angel at 5 a.m. at a campground in Ohio and Merlin the Magician two hours after I adopted him.  What is she doing - channeling my worst nightmares?

I grab Guinness, jog back to the hotel room - thank heaven it's on the first floor - burst into the room, flip on the overhead light and yell, "Wake up!  Ima slipped off her leash!"  D'Niel, my comatose teen-age sleeping boy, is up like he was shot out of a cannon.  He's running out the door and I'm huffing along behind him, calling out instructions.  Guinness has been unceremoniously dumped in the bathroom, insulted at the lack of appropriate gratitude from me for his cooperation.  "Heck, I coulda' run off in the opposite direction and REALLY given Auntie Karen something to think about!"

We split up to circle the building  The three of us meet up on the opposite side, and after trying the "slip under the perimeter fence - dang it, this is just a storm water collection sight" routine, Ima has taken up refuge ("Sanctuary!!  Sanctuary!!  Is anyone here a Catholic?") under an SUV in the parking lot.  D'Niel is on his knees in the wet grass next to the vehicle, and I run for the room, again, to get some turkey pastrami to tempt her with.  I wake up D'niel's friend and put him into action, we grab the deli, and just as we head out to resupply the rescue mission, who do we see at the building door, but D'niel, with an overweight, overtired dachshund tucked under his arm.  "How did you get her?"  I ask, beaming at him.  "The same way I caught Cooper at Yellowstone (where Adina had let him loose out of the van - long, funny story).  I looped the leash and waited 'til she was looking away, then slipped the noose over her head and yanked!"

My boy.  He's a saint!  I don't care what his probation officer says (only kidding)!

More later - I'm wiped out and Miss Ima-Terror-Belle is snoring on the queen-sized bed.

Sounds more like "The Adventures of Ima Outta Here."  Just think what life would be without our precious babies.  Have fun in Memphis, you might wanna check out the ducks.  Heard that was great to see.  Until we hear the latest of Ima's adventures.

I'm absolutely loving all the variants I've seen of her name.  Ima is a winner of a name for sure.  Congratulations Karen and the herd, on your newest member.

Well, life with a female dachsie can be entertaining!  What?  We never mentioned that?  Stay tuned to the further adventures of Ima Independent Girlie Girl of the Herd!   May I suggest cheese?  I am sure somewhere, there is a dachsie who would turn his/her nose up at cheese, but so far, I haven't found one!  And Auntie Karen - you have a grasp on adventure, but have you tried taking two of your own dachsies for about 1850 miles, then down to a friend's house (Delia & Ron's, to be specific), persuaded a friend (that would be Delia, again) and driven another 40 miles to pick up a puppy for your BFF, and then driven at least 1100 miles with two dogs and a 10-week old puppy, back to your home and dropped confused puppy off to your friend?  This included two nights in motels with all three puppers, naturally!   I feel your pain - and joy!

Julia - I'll see your adventure and raise you one 13-week, 15,000 mile-long camping tour of the western United States in a pop-up camper, with three teenagers, a border collie/lab mix for the whole trip and a yipping dachshund flown out to L.A. to join you for the last 4,000 miles.

Call, raise, or fold.

Karen

Glad someone in your party was able to nab her and she did not get lost Greyhound people use a Martindale collar Dogs cannot slip out of them not sure if the come in Doxie sizes. I use one on Buddy. A lady from Greyhound rescue lives down the street told me of them long long time ago. Good luck with your new heart attack girl.

I think I would buy a cheap harness somewhere. Doxies slip collars very easily.

We've had Vacation Bible School at church this week and my daughter convinced me to help, so I've barely made it to the computer after working all day and getting home at 9:30 at night. Add to that, a dying laptop, and things really get fun. Now I'm in working order again and off until July 7 and catching up from yesterday's posts. I can just see this one happening. I hope she stays put while in Memphis and, most of all, doesn't try to teach Guinness any of these tricks! That's all you would need.
Kudos to D'Niel for remembering what works!
Her name is going to be sooooo much fun!!!

Thank goodness D'Niel got her.  Good work, D'Niel.  Ima Troublemaker sounds like she's gonna give her mommy and all the boys in the family a run for their money, but in the end, she'll sit pretty and smile and say, "You may now bow because, Ima Princess."
