Title: My doc is putting me on Zoloft
Post by: PattyInAK on June 23, 2008, 08:19:43 PM
The doctor thinks I am suffering from anxiety, and prescribed Zoloft.  She said she has taken it with good results in the past.  I sure hope it works for me.  Has anyone else ever been on Zoloft or other anti-depressants?

Yes, I have and have had good results. You usually don't see any side effects, and if you do, they are short-lived. I think with zoloft, the main thing is some nausea or loss of apetite for a couple of days. My sister-in-law has taken it before for panic attacks. It should really help you get over this hump and then you will feel much better be able to objectively decide what you want to do. I hope you get quick results.

Thanks for your input Teresa.  I have had nausea and loss of appetite for almost two weeks now because my stomach is tied up in knots, like I am really nervous about something, and I don't know what it is.  I read up on Zoloft and I think there is a good chance it will fix the chemical imbalance in my head.

Patty, My sister-in-law has previously taken Zoloft for her anxiety attacks.  Really helped her alot with minimal side effects.  You should be feeling better in no time!!!

I do anti-depressants in the winter. Usually takes about a week before you notice the difference, sometimes takes longer. Night and day diffrerence. Not perfect but a big improvement.

Patty -
I have been on zoloft for about 5 years.  It has made an amazing difference in my life.  I used to look at it as "quack medicine" -  like it was an excuse to take pills.  But it really filled the gap that was missing for me.  call me hormonal....

I wish you the best!

The doctor told me that with antidepressants others will generally notice a difference in you first, and then a few days later, you will notice a difference in yourself. At least it is that way with depression. I would think with anxiety, you will notice it yourself pretty fast.

There is a comedian who suffers from bouts of severe depression. As she says, this is not a good thing when your career depends on you making people laugh. She talked once about people who would tell her she didn't need to take medication for depression, it was a state of mind, she should be able to get over it, etc. She said if anyone ever says anything like that to you, look at them and say "Why don't you try driving home without your glasses on?". It is the same thing. Someone would never consider not taking insulin for diabetes or their medication for high blood pressure, but a lot of people still refuse to realize that anxiety, depression and panic attacks are all chemical problems and not just "emotional" problems. I thought you might enjoy reading this just in case you had someone give you a hard time and you needed to use that line on them!

After the last few months, you may be surprised at how great you will feel. Once you get past the anxiety and heal from the surgery, there will be no stopping you!

I take effexor and it works wonders.  I hope the zoloft works for you.  Sometimes we need a little medicinal intervention.........

I took Lexapro for about 18 months-stopped about a year ago.  It really made an enormous difference to me.  My depression actually manifested in overreactions-angry or upset at the stupidest things-not so much feeling "blue" though.  I noticed the difference in me within a week, because Lexapro doesn't have the "load up" time of a lot of antidepressants.

. . .and if that doesn't work, you could try a sample from my doctor, Jack Daniels.

If he's not available, try his associate, Dr. Johnnie Walker.

Feel bedder - XOXOXOX

Patty I am trying behavioral therapy first. I have never had such extreme anxiety and symptoms as I have with Hallie the last 6 months and I found this place where they teach you to retrain how your body reacts to stress. We've (Hallie goes with me) only had 2 appointments so far but how he describes it is just what I was hoping for, it's not "talking" therapy it's more clinical, and he says you really can retrain your body and how it reacts. With me it was directly related to Hallie's health problems, I just couldn't go through another 6 months like that. And I like the idea of no drugs if this really will work. It takes time and dedication but hopefully will be worth it. And if things do get worse with Hallie I'm sure I'll have to go to drugs as well, and possibly even some of Karen's Dr's!!  :thumb:  But it will be nice to have both to work with. I asked him why I've never had these awful symptoms (if not for Hallie I may have just driven over a cliff! It 's been really bad...) before since I've been through  a lot of major losses and he said it's accumulative, so maybe you too are reacting to past stuff too this time.
