Title: Dis is What Our Granpa built us!
Post by: Teresa on June 11, 2008, 09:12:01 PM
Our Granpa and our uncle worked together and made us this cool ramp. Now we can use the doggie door and go exploring all by ourselves (or I can-Molly doesn't like the door yet-not enough nose to open it with!). Mom finally tok the time to put up the pictures!

Here I am in MY yard for the first time. It's a big kingdom out here!

This is my version of the flying dachshund!

Here's my fancy ramp!

And this is how good I am at using it!

Hi everyone. Schatzi is doing great going outside. After using mostly pads indoors, she had done really well. She will occasionally have an accident, but not nearly as often as I expected. We've only had one in the last two days, maybe 3 days. Usually it is when she gets distracted outside. The kitty that found us now has a home two doors down. My co-workers mom has taken her in. She isn't really much of an animal person and swore she wasn't going to keep her, but this cat is something else. I've never seen one with this kind of easy-going personality. I'm thrilled that she has a home and I can still see her. Schatzi wasn't going to tolerate her around here and she kept trying to get out of the fence to get to her and chase her. Everyone is settling in here and everything is in one house now. Not unpacked, but at least in one place. The unpacking may take forever!!

Great pictures! Shatzi looks like she approves! I love her collar in the first picture. And the ramp...pretty darn cool! That is pretty awesome of Ganpa to build it. The doggie door looks like it's really big - or is that an optical illusion?

It sounds like everyone is settling in well. At least, like you said, you're all in one place. The unpacking can go as time permits.

Because Molly is an English Bulldog, the door had to be big, the XL actually to fit her width. We could have used the large size if she weren't so wide. I was concerned at first about Schatzi being able to get the flap up, but she has no problem. She puts her nose in the corner of it, the pushes through with her head and she's out. I am going to get something to cover the threshold on the outside of the door. It is metal and is slippery and I think it makes it a little harder for her to get out of the door. My plan is to get another rubberized mat and cut off a narrow piece and velcro it to the threshold. That should take care of that. We are also going to put something on the ramp to make it less slippery. Schatzi doesn't have a problem, but Molly does. She is becoming a high maintenance dog here lately. Very picky about what she will and won't do. At the same time, Schatzi is content to do whatever you want her to. Randy says Molly is becoming a grouchy old lady! I agree! Of course, Meg says I have a love-hate relationship with her anyway. Molly has always been Randy's dog and I'm just the one who feeds her and lets her out sometimes and occasionally walks her. Otherwise she tolerates me. She is sweet, most of the time, but is getting to be unpredictable, and now that my young nieces are around more, I'm afraid we may have some problems with her. Randy acknowledges this, so we are trying to keep her away from them when they are here. I just hate feeling on edge when someone is around her. That comes from having a bulldog before that had dementia and would go from being as sweet as anything to turning on someone in a second. I know Molly isn't the same dog as Jeb, but it still makes me feel uneasy. Didn't mean to get off the subject here, but she's snoring at my feet, so it was on my mind!

Our lot find the door a bit of a challenge so we have it flapped up and have a small fly screen that they can see through. Oliver was our woose we had to tempt him out through it with treats, now if you get in the way you get bowled over, our ramp has decking, out here on side is ridged so it gives them traction. Going by the photos Schatzi has gone troppo, its great to see them run and be carefree.

WOW!  That is an AWESOME ramp Shatzi!  And you look adorable flying through your yard!   Tell Molly that she should try going through the doggy door with her forehead.  Baby Bea has never liked to push out with her nose so she just ducks her head and uses her forehead push the flap open.
Teresa.... sounds like things are still a little crazy in your world!     Hang in there and take your time with the unpacking.  Your going to be there a long time! :thumb:  The new house looks lovely and I really like the lattice on the ramp.  Great idea!  Schatzi, as always, looks gorgeous!

Great pictures and Schatzi looks happy in her new yard!  Love the ramp!  A few years ago, we built one for the puppers - Last year we put a cover on the top to keep it dry when it rains---and we enclose it in the winter to keep the snow from landing on the ramp itself.  To fix the slippery surface for the boys, I took a piece of indoor/outdoor carpeting (trimmed it the the size of the ramp and put carpeting on the surface.  It works really well.  Dee

Oh, I remembered Molly was an English Bulldog, but I didn't think about her width. That's too bad about her unpredictability. That's the only breed of dog I've ever seen make Cesar Millan sweat! I've seen 2 episodes with English Bulldogs and both dogs had him sweating. Athough doxies are stubborn, English Bulldogs beat them, hands down, in that department.

Randy has just started watching some of the Dog Whisperer episodes. I'll have to try to find some of the English Bulldog ones and be sure to Tivo those! If I can get it to work with Molly, it will work with anyone. She is so stubborn, but sooooo smart. That's what makes her so frustrating.

I was thinking of some sorta of carpet. I'll hopefully get around to that in the next week or so. I might make it Randy's weekend project!

I loved the lattice, too, and it keeps them both from jumping off the ramp before the get to the bottom.

What a nice ramp for your doggies!!  Your dad must have a special place in his heart for them..

We are getting ready to build a ramp and put in the doggie door next month for ours so I'm really excited  :hello2: to see a good example of a safe one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to make.

This one wasn't really expensive at all and didn't take long either, especially considering they had to go quite a distance. If you would like, I can take some close-up pictures and send them to you. I was impressed with my dad and my brother since neither had ever seen a dog ramp, much less built one!
