Title: Loki Dawg update SUNDAY
Post by: Leslie on June 06, 2008, 12:12:33 PM
As the vet suspected, there is a new spinal calcification.  The new Dx means that we have to transition from one set of meds to another--Prednisone is the drug of choice here--and continue with crate rest.  I saw the films and saw no disc involvement, BUT we both agreed that it cannot ever be completely ruled out.  This MD has a clue as he has done back surgery in the past.

She acted like a complete nut job the whole time we were there:  "Who wants to be my new best friend? (tail wag)  Do you have cookies? (wag wag wag)  LOOK! a kitty in a BOX! (tail wag and hooting sound)"

Six weeks in the crate and DH will probably move out.  Gonna make up a bunch of freezer pops and buy her a jar of peanut butter.

Sounds she is in pretty good spirits! Tell me about crating...penny went nuts around the 4th week of crating (and we were going nuts too with 4 more weeks of it). Rays still headed her way!

Poor Loki!!  That crate rest is no fun.  The peanut butter and frozen treats should definately help.  Porky really likes broccoli cubes in the summer time.  All you do is fill an ice cube tray with some water, then put a piece of broccoli in each one. Freeze them and have fun watching them try to get it out.  That ought to keep her busy for about 5 minutes.  :2funny:  But, I guess that's better than nothing right?

Excuse my ignorance, but...what is a spinal calcification? I only know disc disease.

Poor Loki and poor you guys! At least she's feeling better. Is she doing OK with the ex pen?

After a pretty good day yesterday the poor pupper can hardly move.  No breakfast, no walkies (it's 10:30 now) but she did wag her tail at me and have a drink of water.  Yesterday was the day we skipped the metacam in order to transistion her to the pred and she is feelin' it.
So, like the old saying goes, will let sleeping dogs lie.
Sure wish I could see if there are any nuero defeciets ( I cannot spell that word) without getting her up.  The tail wag is a good sign I guess.  Your  will be most appreciated.

BTW anyone heard from Dee Dee?  This is not like her.  Unless she is sleeping at the vet's office while Hallie has surgery...but usually she checks in.  Could somebuddy call?

basically, there is a weakness in her spine and he vertebrae actually grew a "bridge" from one to the other to straighten the spine.  She developed one about three years ago, on the x-ray it looks exactly like a thorn.  The new one, behind that one, is smoother looking, but has two bumps--kinda hard to describe.

Anyhoo, it's sometimes called spondylosis but basically is arthritis.  anyone who has had can tell it feel just awful.

She finally got up today about 3pm and drunk walked (the meds) out to pee.  Then she decided she wanted to go get strawberries, so this dang dawg, who can hardly walk, is pulling on her flippin' harness to get at the strawberries. I got her to sit down, muzzled her and carried her inside.  She did not yelp or have any pain response.  (and neither did mom, thanks to the muzzle.  She can be bitey if she's hurtin.)

For suppah I blended some yogurt, strawberries, kibble and olive oil together which she slurped right down.  DH will be home with her in the morning and we dialogue with vet tommorrow.  She's really quiet, but too quiet, it's kinda spooky.  If she doesn't poop in the next couple of days I may have to drive her over to the vet's office.  We can always get a sample there.  :2funny:

Never did get the X-pen as we also had another mini crisis:  DH was driving and got rear ended.  He walked away, but thecar is a total loss because of the cracked frame. (what is it with cracked frames this week?)  What with the insurance, the rental car and shoppin for a new one it's been a slice.

OK...I've got a vague idea what spondylosis is. Ouch! So, the long term plan is meds and crate rest for each episode? Poor pup-dog! Mmmmm...I bet she scarfed supper down. That sounds good. Has she pooped yet?

Oh, no! At least your husband is OK. In that respect, it's a mini crisis, but it's still pretty major.
