Title: Parker appears to have springs embedded in his legs.
Post by: peterparker on June 06, 2008, 06:42:40 AM
I am a new dashie owner. Parker is always launching himself - off the couch, on the couch, on beds etc. etc.  Even when he runs, he skips up to catch a fly or a piece of dandelion fluff, or a bird or a plane that's flying overhead. He is always trying to reach stuff in the sky.
We always roll the ball, and he is trained not to go up and down stairs - but - is this normal behaviour? How do you guys curtail the leaping?
Also, thanks for the life jacket advice. We bought him one, and he doesn't mind wearing it, although so far he stays clear of the edge of the pool. It's nice to not have to leave him in the house when we are outside.

Have you thought about getting ramps to the couch and the beds?  That would help.  Also, you can train your dachsie to wait at the couch or bed for you to pick them up and place them on it.  His behavior is absolutely normal; our babies tend to want to jump.

yes its normal, I have Oliver who is 8 and is still the same, bounces of walls I often say he has attention defict disorder, I now can get him to wait where he is get picked up, but he is impossible. The breeder said their are dachies who jump and others who don't AKA Amy our other she is a sitter and the one who had to have back surgery last year, and are from the same kennels. Ramps with Olver are just another challenge to jump over.

I would also suggest ramps! You can get some great ones from the Dodgerslist store.

take him swimming, I'll bet he loves it.

but just little short swims, that way he won't panic if he falls in somehow.

Also watch the dogs temp when outside with a life jacket, those jackets are like putting on a sweater in the summer. Dunk him in the pool at least once to get em wet and keep em cool. especially a house dog that is used to the air conditoner

In Dog Fancy magazine they showed a ramp that attaches to the side of the pool so if a dog falls in they can get out. Also they have something that floats in the pool if a dog or child falls in it sounds a alarm do not know where you could get one. I bet if you googled alarm for pool something might come up.I also read years ago if you have a flag up by the steps of the pool or the ramp the dog can find the steps or ramp better. Something about the dog is low in the water and cannot see where the steps or ramp is ? You teach them to look for the flag then they can find the steps or ramp. I do not have a pool but just have noticed stuff i thought was interesting.Papbouv
