Title: Puppers and medications
Post by: Doxherding Karen on June 01, 2008, 02:55:24 PM
Dear Hoomans-

I thought I'd mention a story from my long ago past that had a good lesson: "Vets treat puppers, and doctors treat hoomans."

Sam, my ex- husband was the pharmacist for Motzi, the obese beagle owned by Bruce, our dear friend and general practioner.  One day Bruce dropped off a prescription for Motzi.  When Sam got to it, his eyes almost fell out of his head!  Was Bruce crazy?? The prescription for a thyroid medication was at a dosage high enough to kill someone!  Sam got on the phone and was put through to Bruce. Bruce laughed and answered, "I knew you'd catch that!  I saw it after we had left the vet's and called him back to ask if HE had lost his mind!  The vet laughed at me and said, 'No Bruce, that''s the correct dosage for a CANINE, not a homo sapien, O.K.?'"

It seems that canines metabolize pharmaceuticals at a completely different rate.  Some meds they take more, some less, and some the same.  Just like dogs and chocolate or grapes - big no-no's - or three-weeks-dead squirrel from the back alley - yum, yum!

The Herd (all eight) and I send rays to all the achy, cranky, poopy, pooped out and recovering puppers AND hoomans!
