My little Miss eLlIe has a hernia. It is the size and shape of a small marble. I noticed it a month ago, took her to the vet. Then it went away. When she had her dental the vet checked out the the hernia and said "No problem". Now it showed up again yesterday. The Vet still says "Not a problem" ... just watch it. I AM NOT a good WATCHER !
eLlIe is 5 ..... what's with this showing up now ??????
Does anybody have any experience with dachshund hernias ?

Now I know that it was the vet-tech that said "no problem" And I didn't know that the Vet had changed from thinking that it was a cyst to thinking that it was a hernia until Tuesday. see update

I'd get a second opinion for sure from someone more qualified.
I had a hiatal hernia repaired in my 9 yo Lucy. And I've had a hernia repaired on myself. That intestine can get kinked and nothing passes through, no gas, no fecal matter and make you deathly ill if not kill you. In fact I threw up fecal matter, if thats not motivation enough to get surgery, nothing is. Hernias just don't go away. She has a tear in some muscle, that marble thingy is her intestine sticking through the muscle wall, some times it retreats back to the abdomine and you don't see it. That muscle will have to be surgically repaired. Time is not on your side. The longer you wait the more difficult it will be to repair < not always but it can be a factor.
^^^this is "worst case" scenario^^^ that hernia could be in a spot where it won't really be a problem.
I had Lucy's hiatal hernia repaired in order to save her from a gruesome, painful death....and she's a lot happier now than she was before. Yes it was giving her problems.
If you notice that she's doing more than her fair share of throwing up and not eating correctly it could very well be causing her problems.
Yes, get a better qualified opinion....or at least make your current vet explain why it's not a problem.
I agree that hernias can be a problem, sometimes. Not always, but sometimes. In Ellie's case, there may not be any reason to worry, but I agree with JetEd73- I would at least ask my vet why it isn't a problem. He owes you that much. I hate it when they say it isn't a problem and expect you to just accept that. It's no different than saying they need surgery and expecting you to accept it.
Where is the hernia if its a umbical it may be OK, Emma had one of those for most of her life. They said if she was put under for anything they would fix it, but alas her other problems meant she never was put under. Cut that said I would get another opinion

ok .... I took eLlIe to the vet today. She does have an umbilical hernia. Not serious but it should still be repaired.
The story goes that the vet didn't think it was a hernia at first. While eLlIe was having her dental the vet decided that it really was a hernia and asked the vet tech if I wanted it repaired then .... the tech said "NO"
DUH IF I had known that it was a hernia , and IF I had known that it would have been an easy repair to do while she was out for the dental ...
The only thing that the vet tech asked was "do you want anything else done while Ellie is here?" and I said "Yes ... check out her belly .... which at that time they thought it was a cyst, and clip her nails"
So everybody apologized .... and eLlIe still needs surgery.
Oh my gosh Ruth.....I wish they could have taken care of Miss Ellie's hernia while she was out for her dental also. That would have made so much sense. Do you know when you are going to have her surgery? Sending mega prayers and well wishes to you and Miss Ellie for a non-complicated surgical procedure that has her tummy feeling better real real fast. :pray: :pray:
Darn it! Can't people get right the FIRST time? NOOOOO! That means less $$ for them. Sorry to sound sour, but it just seems that "professionals" these days seem to MILK it just for more buck$$$. Here's hoping that Ellie feels better REAL soon. Kissies to the girl with the cute mustache. :comfort:
