Title: Who uses Taste of the Wild food (I think I asked this once before, maybe)
Post by: Teresa on May 14, 2008, 09:31:19 AM
I'm thinking of starting Schatzi on this. I'm debating on Molly. Schatzi has always been able to free feed and has done well with it. Now that she is spayed, I want to make sure she doesn't gain too much weight. I know her increased exercise when we move will help, but I want to monitor her food intake, too. She loves anything fish flavored and the Salmon food in the Taste of the Wild line caught my attention. I know someone on here was using it and I wondered if they still liked it.

I feed Eddie Taste of the Wild, but his is the one made with Bison(its a tough guy thing)  He seems to really go for it, the cats tried it not so much liking it.  Also I found that the price is comparable to Solid Gold or other premium dog foods.

I may even try Molly since it is supposed to be so good for their skin. She sheds so bad and it would be interesting to see if it helps. Purina One makes a canned food with Salmon in their Naturals line that I picked up a couple of days ago to have for Schatzi when she comes home today. That way, if she is feeling finicky, I may be able to entice her to eat a little. I let her try it on Monday and she loved it. We'll see what she thinks later. I'm going to go pick her up in just a few minutes.

That is how Patches got over weight she was free fed at first then if I forgot to pick up my old Papillon's food she would eat that too so after Patches was spayed she started gaining weight was up to 15.7#. Now with starving her at least she thinks she is starving I feed Premium Edge Healthy Weight 1/8 cup in the am & pm  and she trots beside the scooter about three miles at least three times a week if not raining. Patches now weighs 13.7 #we weighed yesterday may try to get off the 7 oz the vet wanted to put her on the diet pill for dogs, but did not say what she should weigh.Still cannot feel her ribs  easily since she is a Long Hair hard to tell by looking at her she will get a bath soon maybe then I can see her better.

I just bought Chicken Soup for the Soul adult for Buddy he usually eats Canidae All Life Stages but seems to be getting tired of it so thought I would get him something different. I use to feed the Chicken Soup for the Soul to my Bouvier he did OK on it but got to wondering how it was faring on   www.dogfoodanalysis.com  the Chicken Soup is rated a 4 on their scale the Taste of the Wild is rated a 6 that is as high as the rating goes. I think I will take the Chicken Soup for the Soul and trade it in for a bag of the Taste of the Wild may be a different price may  call and see. Good thing they know me well at this store so they would do a trade with me I think Diamond makes both foods will have to check on it some of their foods in the past were on the recall list on that China recall. They may have gotten their act together by now though. The Taste of the Wild is a fairly new food out think it came out last year.

Mine have been on Chicken Soup most of their lives. I tried an Old Mother Hubbard brand - can't remember the name of it - a few months ago and they gained 1/2 a pound in about a month! I knew it was more calories/cup but I didn't think it would make that much of a difference. We are now back to Chick Soup and lost the 1/2 pound. I can't remember the calories in TOW, but I'm thinking that's the only reason I didn't switch to that. The ingredients are good. My girls are now 8 and the weight didn't come off easy. Soooo, I don't have the luxury of a young pup's metabolism to be switching around.

Buddy is the one that will get the Taste of the Wild soon it will be so hot here they will not want to eat anything so upping the anti on something different each month depending on how they are eating. It will be 100*at 10:00pm at night so I would not want to eat either even though they are AC hogs. All of my dogs have always lost weight in the summer and gained some in winter so I ususally do not worry too much about weight but Patches was a little over board 15.7# too much weight now at 13.7# she looks allot better she will get to stay on the Healthy weight food may give her a Taste of the Wild gave her 4 pieces of kibble tonight do not think she tastes anything just snarffs it down.

I know for certain that Diamond makes Taste of the Wild. I saw on their site is was manufactured in three states, one being S.C. That got my curiousity up, so I looked into it more and found out it was made by Diamond. They have a plant in Gaston, S.C. (not sure where that is, need to check the map!).
I will also need to check the calorie count and see what it is. Both dogs have eaten Iams and have done very well. I would just love to find something that will help Molly's coat and that Schatzi will be willing to eat at one time and not nibble on all day.

Hmmm - I got samples of Taste of the Wild's Bison, Salmon, and Venison at the dog show in March - maybe I should try them out to see?  The kids loved the little star-shaped breath cookies they make - anyone else tried those?
