Hi, I'm the new owner of an 8 month old mini wiener - Parker. Nosey Parker is probably a more appropriate name. He's a great little guy. I've never had a dog that has enjoyed his toys as much as he has. Potty training is a trial. He just doesn't seem to get it, but I haven't given up yet. But I need some advice?
Congratutions on your new addition and welcome to Wiener Writings. I got Clifford (way back in dark ages) at age 6 months. He was pretty good with being house broken, but he was probably not completely trained until 18 months. Praise early and often as Peter does what you want and anticipate his bodily functions to reduce accidents and get him on a set schedule.
As far as being a Nosy Parker, Peter has a double whammy going right now with being bred to hunt and being a puppy. I remember Clifford deciding one of my lamp cords was especially delicious for a spell and chewed through it 3 times (guess I took longer to train then he did!!). Think of him as you would any toddler in that if it can go in his mouth, it probably will...
Will tellyou what some dog show people do to house train a pup always go with your pup out side to go potty have them on about a six foot lead, go stand in one place wherever you would like the dog to go in the future.Tell the pup go potty or what ever words you wish to use but use those same words ever time.Take the pup out every 2 hours, after naps, playing first thing in the am & last thing in the pm & if circling around sniffing in the house. It is hard to tell on a Dixie when they go so you have to watch very carefully when you see them go pee or poop PRAISE,Praise to the hilt like it is the greatest thing you ever saw you can give a treat if you wish. I would not treat every time they are smart and if you treat every time soon you will have a pup asking to go out just to get a treat. A crate is a great thing if they do not go put them in the crate take them back out in about 30 minutes to an hour.If you want it is good to tie them to you while in the house so they cannot sneak off to go potty or crate them. You can also hang some bells on the back door or the door you use to take the pup outside ring the bell each time you take the pup out the pup will learn to ring the bell to go outside but it takes awhile.Always clean the accident sites with the enzymes that will kill the odor of the accident I have a recipe that is suppose to be good if you want it e-mail me. OK the end result of all this diligent work will be a pup/dog that will go potty on comand great when raining, snowing, on a trip in the car & late at night once they learn it they never forget it. Oh if they have an accident do not say anything to them just clean it up rubbing their nose in it does not work and if you do not catch them in the act their attention span is about 1 second long. oh that is way you take them out on a lead because they forget what they are suppose to be doing if you stand in one spot in the area you want them to go they get the connection sooner since it has their scent there of course pick up the area as usual.

It does take longer to housebreak a little dog vs a big dog sorry Good Luck.
Hello and WELCOME! I love Parker's name!! Only advice from me is PATIENCE and PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE! Mark and I are owned by Madison who is 10 years old. We got her as a rescue, but although mostly housetrained, even at 10, she has her moments. Madderoos can be downright spiteful and if she's mad at us for leaving without her,you will find a puddle when you get home. For that reason, for any time we are away, we've rigged up an x-pen in the laundryroom. Works pretty well.
:welcome:
If cord chewing is a problem, go to an aquarium store. They have clear tubing in various sizes. Buy the 5/8" or 3/4" size, take it home and cut a slit all the way down it. You can slip it over the cord. It will take them a lot longer to chew through. I've used it to rabbit proof my cords, and I use the child covers you can buy at Babies R Us for the outlets. Next up - buying PVC pipe wide enough for my end table legs to fit in!
