I suppose this is as much a house breaking question as anything! Pfeffernusse, at almost 4 months old, does very well using his wee-wee pads, but only indoors. I don't think I've ever seen him go outside yet! He still squats like a girl. My vet and my doggie trainer both suggested taking a soiled wee wee pad outside so he can see that it's perfectly all right to go out there, but even this isn't working. He sniffs avidly at his "markings" (I like to sort of rub the soiled pad onto the grass to "scent mark" it for him) but still no going. When I take him out, no matter how long or short the walk (usually around the yard, sometimes around the block) he holds it, and goes on the pad when he gets indoors. So I'm wondering if he'll just "get" it when he figures out how to scent mark. Anyone who's seen the dachshie mind in action knows that the only good ideas are their own ideas, and they take forever to change their mind on any topic! I'm not too terribly worried, because he is so good with the pads, but he really should learn to go outside!
How about putting a pee pad pad outside I would fold it making it smaller & smaller until they do some on the grass. Praise Big time when he goes do not walk around so much if you want them to go potty some Dog Show people train this away. 1st take them out on a 6 ft lead stand in the area you would like for them to go in when adults. Just stand in one spot let them walk around in the 6 ft lead area. Tell them go potty or what ever word s you want to use always use the same words. When they go Praise Big Time like it is the greatest thing you ever saw you can even treat but I would not treat every time. Other wise a smart pup will have you going out just for treats. You can also hang a bell on the door you go out of ring it every time you go out to go potty. One day the light bulb will come on and they will ring the bell to go out.A 4 month old pup in not usually in to scent marking at that age it is usually when they are older. This really works if you are diligent about it the trouble with low to the ground dogs it is sometimes hard to know when they go. It is very nice when they get the concept and will go on comand really nice when it is raining, snowing, night time & when on a trip in the car.I'm sure you are going out every 2 hours, after sleeping. eating, playing and if circling around sniffing. It does take longer to train a small dog vs a big dog.
Good Luck

Yup, that's exactly what my trainer recommended ... either that, or resorting to an indoor doggie litter box! I think I'm gonna end up somwhere in between ... I'll keep plugging at getting him to go out, and when I can't, the wee wee pads are a lot easier to clean up than complete untrained messing, or messing in a crate! Anyway, thanks much for the reply! :)
I remember Angus, girlie squated for ages, Oliver in the garden girlied but big boyed out. Even that took years for him to go on walks, I think it a secuirty thing, Amy has to be desprite to go twosies on a walk, and she marks on walks, be it only once.
I just took them out after food or water and stood outside no matter the time or weather till they went and praised to high heavens when they went. We have a doggie door so they do not have to tell us they want out..I also have a word, Amy's is "Whats a girlie Do" Oliver its wee wee's, they are both food as if going on a trip it helps. Amy since her op has a fear thing when I'm not around and uses piddle pads, I don't care at least she goes on them.
I digress, I think the gilie squats will go on for a while, to get him going outside..............patience.

LOL, your words are so cute! Mine is really to the point -- "C'mon, Pfeffie, make a tinkie!" I think part of my problem is timing, too -- getting from morning to getting home , that's a pretty long wait, and in the meantime, he's pretty enthusiastic in his use of the pads. Even morning rush-rush could be timed better -- do I get him out first thing, or wait til he eats? Then, if I have him wait, do I shower first, or get the animals squared away first? My own schedule isn't as puppy friendly as I'd like ... but then, I really don't mind the wee-wee pads that much. I just think it's more natural for a dog to do his tinkie's outside!
With ours we walk them first thing out of the kennel in the morning. They both will do their business. While the rest of the house is getting ready we let them eat. Once everyone is ready the dogs go for a second walk (its about 45 minutes later) and Champ, the treat hound, will poop again but Smokey just pees. They are then in the kennel till someone comes home ant the ritual is repeated. Outside first eat later then 45 minutes later second time outside. Champ is our champion pooper. He will drag poop out of the recesses of his body everytime we go out because he knows he will get a treat. He will squat in the position for 5 minutes to push something out just to get the treat. we only give treats for the pooping. Our house is not scheduled well for a puppy but we find that outside after any kenneling works best. Ours go in the kennel when no one is home because when Mom's away everything is fair game and they love to shred just for the sake of shredding
Sometimes they need another male dog to show them how it's done. Dachshunds are wonderful at imitating. When Max-angel was a puppy, he would pee like a girl until he stayed with some friends that had a male sheltie. Once he saw the male sheltie lift his leg, sure enough, Max started lifting his leg. Rudy learned lifting his leg from Max and Tony, the neighbors Cocker Spaniel.
Zeke still prefers peeing on all fours, no doubt because he was trying to imitate Zora. Zeke will mark territory, but he still prefers to not lift his leg.
my dachshunds nearly 3 and he wee's like a girl still he never lifted the leg. he is fully house trained but he thank god he doesn't cock the leg because my sister's doxie does and he started marking the furniture but he stopped again after been scolded so many times
