Question for the pups here who have had an area shaved for surgery or some other procedure. Do you recall how long it took for it to grow back in? For any of the coat varieties? Hallie's patch is now almost 2 months regrowth and it still is more skin than hair. When we were at the vet yesterday, she was surprised at how bald she still is and I asked her how long it took most dogs to grow and she said when they come back in to get their stitches out (10 days) it's a lot more grown in than Hallie's is now at almost 2 months. :doah: At this rate it will be years til it grows to it's full length again.
Of course I don't care, I am just so happy she's doing so well! But it's a grim reminder of what we've been through and I am curious how fast other doxies here grew their hair back in.
It might just take her going through a shed cycle-since it's spring, she should be about to lose hair, so she might just not be growing very well right now. My cats normally take about 3-4 months to grown their hair back after they are shaved (I shave my longhairs every spring).
Penny's took at least 4 months to come in... poor thing! I'm so glad Hallie is doing good! :hello2:
SO glad she is doing so good...... just practice your comb over techniques !!! She is beautimus hair or no hair !!! :hello2:
I'm sure a comb over would look better on Hallie than on the Donald. :angel4:
LOL OK I feel better...at least summer is coming! My poor Dane, Fred, was so sick all his short six years he never didn't have a shaved spot somewhere on his body.
Katherine how funny, I used to shave my 2 himalayans every year too. They would start to matt in February each year so that's when I'd shave them and you are right I do remember their hair taking months to come in. Hallie has a really...."unique" coat. She has no undercoat so she never sheds. You can run your fingers through her hair and pull on it, etc and you rarely even get one hair. When I bathe her, there is never any hair in the drain even. When I comb her I can get a little hair out but only if there is a slight mat (she doesn't normally mat but sometimes if she scratches she'll create a little "rat" in her hair) I'll get a few strands. I have never noticed her shed in the spring, or a certain time of year either. I love that she doesn't shed! But it is sort of strange. Even her skin Dr thought it was odd, when he looked thru her coat last time he said "is her hair always like this??" Since no undercoat you can see skin easily when you part her hair. But she has plenty of coat! :dontknow: I was wondering if this has something to do with her slow hair growth now, she has hair coming in a bit but there are still large spaces between the hair where you can see lots of skin. She has bare pink skin on her belly now and on the flip side, bare blue/gray skin.
Oh my, Kari...four months for a smooth hair! Hallie may have that patch for a while yet then. My niece was here this weekend and we considered shaving a rectangle on the back of our heads in support...but then I pictured her Dad's face and thought better of it. :)
Barb she is doing SO good!! Yesterday she was so silly and for the first time in months she started to do a diggie-runny attack in the garden! I had to intervene which I hate but it was so wonderful to see her feeling silly again. I just can't believe her back episode was anything other than a disc...not that that isn't bad enough but better than the other idea from neuro #1!! We are having so much fun again, going places, shopping, etc. We even went to class last week even though we are sidelined from now on and won't be participating, but I think it does her good to sit and watch and feel part of the group and see her friends. We're also able to take walks again and are up to about 5 minutes (she could go much longer, she looks normal but after 6 weeks of no walks I want to work her up again to our usual walks).
LOL Marcia. I agree with that! At least Hallie's IS growing....albeit very slowly.
Here she is shopping for frames with me last week..and at the race track, you can see the horses on the hot walker in the background.
Then this weekend with her cousin Rachel, morning kisses and shopping at Toys R Us. We had a ball with my niece, Rachel who is now 12 (my sister passed away when Rachel was just 2 months old). She is such a SWEET little girl, just like her Mom, and her Dad won't let her have a dog (he does have a point...they are never home she ice skates and dances and is always practicing) but she wants one so bad and loves Hallie and she amazes me with her comments about pet care, she is always right on the money with her ideas, training, neutering, rescue, etc. She has done her homework! Hallie didn't get much sleep while Rachel was here due to the both of us petting her constantly. But she loved it.
Amy had a stubble that seemed to go on for ever, then it all of a sudden appeared. I think with long hairs, particularly our sort fo hairy ones its more pronounced than the short hairs. What I noticed with Amy was she had white skin will Emma, had black grey and Oliver pink so I think that does not help.

Hallie's pictures are always good - but I love the ones of her and your neice !!!!! You can tell there is a true love between them !!!
Rachel really favors you... with blonde hair !!!! Did you and your sister look a lot alike?
Thanks for sharing !
(So does anyone say anything about Hallie being in those stores? Or is that an accepted practice in your area? I think it is very kewl :thumb: )
That is interesting Amy has white skin!! Hallie's is more like Emma's. I can imagine Oliver has pink, Hallie's is also pink under the tan. Interesting how their bodies know where to put what color. It has been unseasonably cold here too so we have been using our "Amy Coat" a LOT. :thumb: I hope Hallie's hair will have a spurt like Amy did.
Thanks Barb. Julie and I looked alike in some ways but she was much prettier :) and shorter (5'6"...I am 5'9") . She took after our Mom's side more I think. She was blonde, and so sweet and a genuinely nice person. Funny, quiet, everyone loved her. Rachel is a lot like her. I can see her Dad in her too though. He is 6'6" poor kid has no hope of not being tall and thin! Her brother is 2 yrs older than her and he is tall but not super tall at least not yet. Rachel also understands how to treat a dachshund, and she does all the right things and is so careful. I think I over did it though because as much as she loves dachshunds, she will not ever get one now due to their back problems. She is thinking Papillon. Someday.
I have figured out the stores here who don't seem to have a problem with a little dog in a stroller. If she were down running around on the ground I think it would be a different matter! But she is rarely even noticed in her stroller, she snuggles in like in the photos and she never moves, or says a peep she lays just like that until we get back out to the car. People often ask if she's really old because she is so still and quiet in there but as soon as I do get her out she's dancing around like a puppy.
Gretl-Angel's took about 4 months, and she was a red smooth. I thought it was taking forever. (And by the way - since Brekke's emergency trip and two nights at the vet last August, where they trimmed her for the i.v. and clipped her fanny because of diarrhea, she is finally growing out from those! - that's 8 months!)
Amy here I now have a completely covered foo foo valve as my mum calls it, she did a mental at the vets when she found out what they had done to it, mind you I agree it is only in the last few months I can sit on da tiles. My mum said they should not have done it as she was happy to wash it for me, as my britches are "just "ME"".
Haillie don't mums fuss so, your cousin looks real pretty, you will have to look after her, as she is just a girlie not like us Big girlies, you look as if she listens to you.
Your dear hairy friend Ms A
