Title: Mouse Hunting! (kinda graphic)
Post by: Leslie on April 17, 2008, 06:31:13 AM
Dis is Zuzu:  Last night I heard da stinkin' mouse under da rocks in da yard.  I tried to dig him out and I tried to pull the ivy vines out and I talked to him eber so sweetly and he did not come out!  Momma came over and he jumped out of his hidey hole and went "SQE--!"  Dats when I ca-runched him! Momma sed good job!  I guess I am getting beddar at dis 'cause dis time da mouse did not want to play.  He tasted kinda good, too.

Les here: Yep, she's got the hang of it now. If DH hadn't pulled up to the driveway at just that moment I think she might have started to uh, de-stuff it.  Loki picked it up and carried it a few feet, but I am not sure if either or them are clear on the prey/food concept.  I guess they would be if they weren't so well fed.   Mysteriously, that mouse later flew over the fence.

Anyhoo, of the hunters out there, who also EATS the catch of the day?

Toby-Man here....  Seriously dudes, why would ya want to eat dem?  It's a whole lot more fun to bring dem home to mama to play with!  If der is one thing that gets my mama movin REAL fast it's bringin da confirmed kills in through da doggy door.  Den der are da loud noises that she makes.  Mostly Oscy an I bring her da lizards, but on occasion we have been known to drag in a nice snake or mole.  Probley best not to talk about what mama said when I brought da snake in.   :cussing: :cussing: We are really good at gettin dem bad boys!  Oscy flushes dem out an I go in fer da kill.   Da baby dog is gettin better at huntin to.  She just gots to learn dat she is NOT gonna catch da birds so she might as well give dat up.

My guys haven't brought anything down.   Rudy was an insect killer, but that was about it.   Both him and Max would occasionally try to kill a toad, but the alkali coatings would cause them to foam up in the mouth.

However, when I worked at a landscape company, Scallywag, the mixed-dobie was a ruthless killing machine, taking down birds, foxes, groundhogs and opposums.   She would bring her "trophy" back to present to us.

Stormy and Sophie both kill snakes--Stormy, whose technique displays a vast experience of snake-hunting,  must've taught Sophie.  Stormy will take on about any snake (garter and king snakes are predominate in this area) and Sophie takes on baby snakes.  Sophie will bring hers onto the 3-season porch for display (and speedy disposal), Stormy leaves his lay.  Stormy has been known to swallow an entire baby bird while out on a walk--feathers, feet, everything.  One year, we had a mouse get in, and Sophie was on constant alert for noises from the ductwork, but we caught it before she did.  Stormy just snoozed through all the excitement.

Way to go Zuzu and Loki!  My Dolly was the "killer" of the family.  She was the squad leader for possum kills, of which there were several.  Maddie, we've learned, not influenced by the prey-driven Dolly, is rather a gentle hunter.  She sniffs and that's about it.  'Course, she's gotten older.  Maybe when she turned 10, she declared herself retired.

Dolly and Madison, the winners of the Sarge and Looie Kilt Possum award.  The Proof is hanging on the wall....the award, that is.

:thumb:  When we lived in the country, I was on a mission against a particular mouse that evaded my most sensitive of traps!  LOL!  Rascal had the trail down and so I knew where to set the traps.  But, alas, Rascal was the mighty hunter who finally brought Mommy the prize!  Thank goodness he didn't eat it!  He was too proud to bring it to Mommy!  :-)  this is the same little guy that I had to take to the Vet for a Copper-head snake bite!  He still carries the scar!  He is my Mighty little Doxie!   I love him especially when I say "Get the Bug" and he rescues Mommy!  LOL!  gotta love them!
