Title: More rays, please! Poldie just isn't any better.
Post by: Jeri on September 23, 2005, 08:58:50 AM
As you know, Poldie was having trouble with his back leg two weeks ago.  The vet put him on Rimadyl and while he didn't get well, he seemed to be doing a bit better.  That was until the Rimadyl ran out.

Last night he just couldn't put any weight on the leg at all.  We only have one step leading from our patio into our kitchen, and he needs our help to get up the one step.  Kevin even had to help him get into his bed (his bed is on the FLOOR).  This is just heartbreaking.   :comfort:  Poldie wants to be active, but  can't do the things he wants because the leg just will not work.

Kevin took him to the vet this morning.   :ambulance:  One the first visit, the doctor, Kevin, and I all thought it was his trick hip (he has shallow hip sockets) or possibly arthritis.  Now we doubt that is the case.  His femur is properly in his hip socket, can move properly, and there are no major signs of arthritis in that joint.  Furthermore, his knee is also functioning properly, there appears to be no obvious injury to his leg or foot, and he seems to not be in much pain.

So what gives?   :dontknow:  The doctor wants him to come back Monday for Dr Goode to examine him. They will put him under, manipulate the joints and do a thorough exam and evaluation.  He will also possibly get and MRI, although the MRI might not reveal the problem.  He will definitely get a dental cleaning. :brushteeth:

The vet is guessing that it might be a soft tissue injury, such as a torn ligament, or a neural problem.  Whatever the reason, he cannot use the leg.  He is back on Rimadyl.  We have been giving him glucosamine/chrondroitin for ages, and the vet says that the dose he has been receiving is exactly right for a dog his size.  She also wants him back on Omega 3 fatty acids.  We tried this once before, but I had given up because they capsules gave him BAD diarrhea.   :pottytrain5:  I'll try it again and hope for the best this time.

Please send Poldie rays and prayers   for his leg and for no diarrhea, and for a comfortable weekend, and finally a diagnosis and successful treatment come Monday.  I know I am asking for a lot, but I want the best for my little man.

Sending lots of rays!   Yes, it does sound like a head scratcher.

Maybe with Poldie's trick hip, some soft tissue got damaged even through the leg popped right back into place?   If anyone can find the cause of Poldie's problems, it will be Dr. Goode.

:bandaid:  I am sorry to hear that Poldie is having a problem with his leg - its so sad when they can't do the things they are used to doing.  Give him some smootches from Anty Sue in Wisconsin, and tell him the King will take care of the varmints until he gets better.  Please keep us posted.

Poldie here,

Toby you got a deal!  My folks and I have been awfully sorry that you are so sick.  We were happy to hear that you haven't thrown up lately, and that you got to spend the weekend at home.  Beating heartworms is serious stuff, but I know you can do it!  :thumb:

Your friend,

Leopold
ps:  Skeeter & Boone are wishing you well, too
