Title: Reverse Sneeze or Kennel Cough
Post by: LoveDoxies on April 07, 2008, 10:56:43 AM
Sadie gets the "reverse sneeze" sometimes when she gets excited or drinks water too fast.  Saturday, she kept hacking and snorting on and off for about 4 hours (like she had something stuck in her throat).  I called the emergency vet on call and she said that it sounds like kennel cough.   :bandaid:   Apparently there has been an increase in kennel cough cases because it's become airborne so even dogs that are not in direct contact with other dogs can get it.

She continued to hack off and on throughout the evening but didn't cough at all Sunday or Monday morning.

How can I tell the difference between kennel cough, a long reverse sneeze attack and a throat obstruction?

My other doxie is totally fine.  The emergency vet said that they usually treat the kennel cough with antibiotics.  But if it's a virus, why treat with antibiotics?

Any other snorting/hacking doxies out there?

I'm not totally sure on this one but I don't think it is Kennel Cough if she isn't coughing anymore. My parent's beagle had it and it was pretty harsh...coughing all the time.

A dawg with kennel cough looks really sick.  Puny, listless, lack of appetite, etc.  Reverse Sneezing usually abates within five minutes.

My chocolate/tan girl Zora had issues with the Kennel Cough vaccination.   If given by injection, it causes her to have the reverse sneeze.   The reverse sneeze could also be allergies, or sometimes they do it from habit.

A good way to "undo" the reverse sneeze is to cover the nostrils with your fingers.  This forces the dachsie to breathe through its mouth, which usually breaks the reverse sneeze.  Still, if you have any doubts, take Sadie to the vet.  Always better safe than sorry!

Porky has reverse sneeze attacks a lot!!   He is allergic to a lot of different things and every once in a while he starts really doing the reverse sneeze and hacking thing.  Our vet has us give him benedryl on days when it seems to be out of control.   Definately ask your vet first before giving your dog benedryl though!     I hope you can figure out what is going on. I agree with the others that it doesn't sund like kennel cough, but you never know.   :dontknow:

Departed Dolly reversed sneezed a lot.  I'd get her to stop by blowing in her nose.  It made her gulp.  The act of swallowing seemed to break it up.  Miss Roo is too ornery to be bothered with reversed sneezes.

Reverse sneezing might be an aftermat of kennel cough.  Petunia is a rescue and the lady that had her has a kennel and some of her dogs came down with kennel cough and she got reverse sneezing after that.

First the kitty is doing great, back to smacking Eddie around.  Now on to Eddie with the weather finally getting warmer he is starting  to pant more and last night he started to cough.  So this morning it was off to see Dr Cindy.  Eddie may have a new strain of Kennel Cough.  Dr Cindy said we caught it in time and with the Auntie Biotics Eddie will be OK, but no groomer for his hair cut for a few weeks.

Eddie here I don't mind the pills, but I don't like the cough syrup.
