Title: Extremes in Dachsie Loyalty
Post by: Jeri on April 03, 2008, 07:12:39 AM
When you're down, you find out who your friends are, as I found out this weekend.  I woke up Sunday more sick than I had been in years.  You know the sitting-on-the-toilet-with-your-head-in-a-wastebasket kind of sick.  :pottytrain5:  :puke: :pottytrain5:  :puke: :pottytrain5:  :puke: In between I couldn't do a thing but lie in bed, and did so for two days.  In addition to the flu, I had a migraine, but can't take anything for a headache on an empty stomach, so just had to wait for it to run its course.  I did try to get out of bed for a bit on Monday to watch TV, but that took too much effort and I went back to bed.

Through it all, shadow number one, Longfellow, did not leave my side.  He had to stay next to me, touching me and looking at me with deep concern, the whole time.    :comfort:  Kevin had to literally tear him away from me in order to get him to eat or go outside.  I was so touched by his complete devotion, and my affection for him is even deeper now.

Shadow number two, Boone, was scarce during this time.  He usually sleeps on the big bed, but Sunday wouldn't even share the same room with me.   :bolt: Monday night I carried him into bed, but he was reluctant and slept on the opposite side of the bed, as far from me as possible.  I mentioned this to Kevin, and he said that a few months ago, when he was sick, he noticed that Boone didn't want much to do with him.  Boone does not like sick people!

I'm feeling better, and it's obvious to Boone and Fella.  Fella now gives me a little space.  And I woke up in the middle of the night to find Boone sleeping on my pillow, his head next to mine and his ear flopped over my forehead.  Like any good dachsie parent, I just closed my eyes and went back to sleep.

Do you have any dogs as caring as Fella, or fair weather friends like Boone?

BTW, the only reason I didn't mention Skeeter is that she is Kevin's dog, and never leaves his side.  Thus my illness didn't affect her routine one bit. But she sticks with him through the worst  :love3:

Awwwwww how sweet is that ?  Sure glad you are feeling better !!!!   My Brandy sticks by me through thick or thin. Mr. Independent, Rudy, only gets close when he is tired or he doesn't feel good - he is too busy !!!!  Glad you had one nurse that watched over you !!!

Our two act like two SUPER Velcro dogs when I am sick.  Champ the sluggard thinks it is great that I am home and wants to be in the big bed with me (they normally do not sleep in the big bed).  He knows that i am home and will bark to be let out of the kennel and to quiet him down i put him in bed with me.  Smokey knows when i am getting sick, it must be the smell because he will not leave my side and will stand on my chest to check my breath.  He will do this every 5 minutes when i start getting the signs; head ache , sore throat, queasy stomach.....  I have to leave him in the kennel when i am home sick because he will drive me crazy with the sniffing.

So Champ gets the big bed and will sleep under the covers and keep my feet warm and Smokey gets the kennel to himself and he seems to enjoy it.  When Champ is not there he can snuggle under the pads and not get stepped on by the Fat One.

When I broke my leg in 92, falling down my front porch steps, hit concrete blocks and smashed the one leg bone into looking like an eggshell....My Twinkie angel was with me.   Sadly the flexi leash was wrapped under me. I had to yell for help, thankfully lady in trailer across the street heard me, and willingly crossed behind my trailer to the next street and got my bother in law who had to come over the remove Twinkie.  Let's just say, NO ONE would been able to get close to me!!!

During recovery from the same broken leg, my mother visited me one day.  Twinkie was sitting right by her scarfing up the treats. THEN MOM got up to walk to me and hand me a bunch of books she brought for me. Twinkie stood between her and I (in my wheelchair)  barking her fool head off!   Of course then about a minute or 2 later, Mom was safely seated and Twinkie went back over by her wagging her tail and taking treats like a little lady!!  It was a bad break and I was off work for almost 6 months and in wheelchair until i went back to work.

I must say having Twinkie with me during that recovery was wonderful.  I seldom left the house, and she kept me occupied and needing to care for her, kept me from just losing track of time!!

Maybe because Boonie is deaf, he relies more on his functioning senses, particularly smell, and when he detects sickness it scares him.   Undoubtedly, he must have been exposed to a lot of sicknesses in the puppy mill before he was rescued.

Mine always stick to me like glue.   I recall having food poisoning one time and sleeping for nearly 24 hours straight.   Rudy-angel & Max-angel never left my side.   Somewhere there's a pic of the Zs snoozing next to me while I wasn't feeling well.  I'll have to go find it.
