Title: Worried I made the Wrong Desicion for Patches HELP any Ideas
Post by: papbouv on March 24, 2008, 09:02:18 PM
Today I took a very happy Patches up to have her teeth cleaned have been using the same vet for many, many years. I went to pick Patches up a vet tech carried her out she screamed twice while he was holding her.? I thought she may still be under the influence of the anesthesia some dogs make all kinds of noises. I took her up at 8:00am not sure of the time they did call about 11:00am to tell me she was fine and recovering from the anesthesia. I picked her up at 3:30pm so she should be over it right maybe a little sleepy? She did not want to go up steps she is walking very slow ? she is giving the LOOK like what the Heck did you do to me.I asked the vet about the Dental vaccine he recommended it so I said go ahead since i thought it might be good since Patches is a young dog.Guess I should have asked here what you all thought of it first. She to get another in three weeks I googled it was not impressed on what I read about it.When I picked Patches up tonight to put her in the water bed she screamed again so will see what is up in the morning with her may be going back to the vets nither of us will be happy about it. I'm wondering if she got dropped or when they had her on her back cleaning her teeth if it made her back hurt.I had my little Papillons teeth cleaned over the years and she never came home like Patches is acting. Any Ideas I guess a few Rays for Patches would not hurt.

You might want to take a piece of foam the next time she gets her dental,  they just lay them on the cold stainless steel table. You might crate her for a couple of days,  get her some Ester-C and glucosamine . I know a lady that had her doxie spayed and she came home paralized. Here are  prayers   :pray:for her, that she will be ok.

Oh I hate to hear this. I also cannot figure why she would be screaming like this. I wonder if the pressure used while cleaning her teeth may have aggravated something?  What did the vet tech say about her screaming while he was holding her, anything? I have not heard of a dental vaccine...I will have to google that. I agree with Luvmygunner, I would crate her tonight and keep her confined until you can talk with the vet in the morning. And if you can check her proprioreception response...knuckle over her front and back foot to see how long it takes her to right it, or if you notice her getting worse or not able to walk right get her in somewhere tonight. Don't let her attempt stairs, or run around on her own. I don't like the sound of her walking slow and not wanting to do stairs, unless she is still feeling out of it from the anesthesia but with the screaming along with it, I would take all precautions as if it were a back thing adn we'll just hope and pray it's not but better safe than sorry. I wonder if the injection site for that vaccine might be really sore??

I am so sorry for you both I know how stressful this kind of thing is. Let us know how she is in the morning and what the vet says. Prayers for sweet little Patches!

edit: I just found this, you probably have already seen it. I wonder if her pain was caused by the vaccine as stated here then, would be better than a back problem! Do you know where they gave her the shot, maybe check to see if it is swollen or tender or hot?

The new canine porphyromonas (periodontal) vaccine (manufactured by
Pfizer Animal Health) was granted conditional licensure by the USDA under a
“fast track” procedure because of the safety and efficacy already demonstrated in
clinical trials. Dogs of 161 distinct breeds or breed crosses were represented in
25 regionally diverse sites across the United States. There were 653 dogs in the
study (234 were less than 10 weeks of age) and 1342 vaccines administered.
The types of adverse events reported included generalized pain, injection site
swelling/pain, and lethargy. No significant adverse events were observed in any
animal during the study period and most of these reported events were mild and
self-limiting, requiring no treatment.

Wonder how you can tell if it is the vaccine or a back problem ??? to night when I picked her up to put her in bed she yelped. If she yelps when I get in the bed I will put her in her crate it is in the other room no more room in my room if that makes any sense. Wanted her close if possible since she is acting odd.

Thanks for the support so glad Miss Halie is doing better now.

I hope she does well tonight and it's just a sore neck from the shot. If you know where they gave it, press it gently to see if it's swollen or hot and also if Patches reacts to it as though it is sore. Hopefully that is all it is! Hang in there tonight I hope you both get some rest.

This  is just me,  but I sure would call the vet and see if she waas dropped somehow? Also I would do a search on the dental shot, if its fairly new (which i think it is) I realy would stay away from anything that is so new on the market. I gave Gunner the Heartworm preventive shot 2X,  until I joined Dodgerslist and everyone was against it. A lot of people lost their dogs because of it and and I just stopped it. My vet was realy plucking it.
More prayers for her    You might try just giving her a baby asparine.

Ask them how they positioned her neck as Colleen says they can be very rough with them when they are under.
Keep her crated and go to an emergency vet even if you think you are silly if she is not wanting to walk etc, as if it is the worst you have fear the sooner they can get to it.
