like it's not hard enough to figure out what to feed these little guys! I know this link is just about Nutro, but who knows what other food will be next. This is so frustrating!!!!

Oh, my goodness, Delia - I read through to the end, and what sad stories! I am glad that so far, the Solid Gold we feed has been untainted. It seems like everything is mad, bad, and dangerous to eat these days!
Thanks for posting this....it IS so frustrating - not knowing what to feed. I am struggling as to what to switch mine to. It has been so hard to get the Solid Gold canned food for Brandy. I decided to try Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul and I thought I would change Rudy to the kibble, since he has been on the Solid Gold for 7 yrs. Well Brandy doesn't like the food - she will eat it but I have to sprinkle with cheese and Rudy has gas and he has never had gas. SOOO, I am getting Solid Gold kibble and going to switch Rudy back - mixing for a week or 10 days. Not sure what I will change Brandy to - I am going to go back to a few threads here - Marcia had recommended a couple foods. Since Brandy is 12, I definatly want to feed a Senior brand.
Maybe this would be a good thread for everyone to list what they are currently feeding and if they are pleased with it?
I just checked the Solid Gold website and they are once again selling the large cans of food. I went ahead and ordered 12 cans - almost as much to ship it..... but I feel good about their food, so it is worth it. Plus, if they are once again selling the large cans - hopefully the distributors will too !!!!
One of the other foods that I thought about trying was a holistic foor called Ultra - I didn't realize until just now that it is made by Nutro - so thanks Delia for your post !!! Looked at that and then decided to take a quick look at Solid Gold - glad I did !!!
What are your thoughts about periodically changing foods? With so much out there to choose from and so much stuff going on with tainted food - I am hesitant about changing ever !!!! Plus it takes a while to switch - mixing the two together... and now I have several cans that I probably won't use - i will take them to the local shelter.....
Both the cats and Eddie have been switched to Taste of the Wild which everyone loves. I had to audit Whole Foods Market the other day and always buy some all natural canned food when I am there and to my surprise its no more pricey than what I buy at my regular pet store and the furkids like it a lot. I wish that they had bigger bags of dry food but we will stick with Taste of the Wild for now.
I did an audit at a local pet shop for Nutro and really wasn't impressed by what the sales associate said about them nor the literature they gave me.
We've been feeding the Zs Nutro since we first got them from Yamisi. Zora eats it ravenously, but Zeke will frequently refuse his food and has had a propensity for vomiting far more often than any of my other dachsies ever did. Zeke's coat is poor. but I was told that blues tend to have poor coats, so I don't know if that is food related. I can't seem get him to put on any weigh, either. By my guess he is about 2 pounds underweight.
After reading those testimonials, I'm really beginning to wonder if a change in food should be expedited. While Zora will eat just about anything, she will also react to most foods and the Nutro does agree with her.
We have a place called "Bark" that sells all-natural dog foods, so we might give that a try.
Oh man...just when we were starting to relax about feeding our dogs again! That is nuts. Why can't they get things figured out? I wish I were brave enough to feed raw or home cooked but I'm not. Even if our own brand is not recalled or known to cause problems at this time, it could happen tomorrow, no one is safe. Thanks for this post Delia!
Barb - Brenda and I nagged the Petco closest to us, and they began selling Solid Gold about 2 months ago. They only had small cans at first - told us there was a back-order production problem at the company, but when we went last weekend, they had the large cans in stock again - that way we don't have to pay the shipping! We usually split a case of 24 because it's so much cheaper. Brenda has 3 dogs = 18 cans, and I get the other 6 for Miss Brekke. Is there anyone nearby who feeds it and you could split the case?
I have 2 Petco's where I get the Solid Gold. I am going to check with each one to see if they have the large cans in yet. I also have a vet that carries it that I check at. I am going today to get some kibble for Rudy and am hoping they have the canned !!! No one that can split and I hate to buy a case for just one pupper...... I am glad they have them back, and relieved to go back to Solid Gold for both kids. It IS such a task to try and figure out what to do. THEN finding a place to get it is another issue !!!!
Gosh, how does one decide! And this time, I'm doing everything RIGHT. I thank my lucky stars all my three cats and Strudel were spared from that awful tainted dog food from last year, and nowadays, nothing but the best for my Little Foo Foo! I'm trying Canadae, because that's what my trainer recommended (he was horrified when I said I had a can of Alpo for puppies!) He also recommended Solid Gold, which I see many of you use. I don't want to mess around too much, but has anyone had any good or bad experience with Canadae?
We have just recently been able to get Solid Gold canned (small ones) here in Ohio again. I have never seen large cans. I had switched off to Wellness canned to hold us over. I was also able to get Solid Gold kibble though - hopefully they have the production issue(s) solved. We mix the wet & dry.
Reddy LOVES his Solid Gold and his weight is easy to maintain with it. :thumb: Red highly endorses the jerky treats. They're expensive but he's gotta hav'em!
Sorry...no experience with the Canadae brand.

Solid Gold does make a 13. something oz can. They had a problem with one of their canneries and have been out of the large ones for a LOOONG time ! I went to my Petco at lunch and they now have the large cans - they were not carrying the small ones. Do you have Petco where you are? The ones in the Dallas area have been carrying Solid Gold for the last 6-8 months or so.

Okay, I was getting the big cans and didn't know it. :2funny:
Yes, we have Petco's here as well as Complete Petmart which carry Solid Gold. Unfortunately none of them are convenient to home or work.
I do have a Pet Supplies Plus across the street from where I work - GREAT store. Unbelievable selection of pet foods/toys/bedding, etc., they have Solid Gold and are CHEAPER! :meme:
I am still feeding the Nutro and until I hear something definite I will not change. Zack has been on it for 14 years and Zena has been on it for 2.
I did check out this site last week when someone from the kennel club sent it to me.
I have read this and since Nutro tests each batch themselves and from independent labs and also does feeding tests on them I would think that if these were showing up in 4 days like they say in some of them they would have shown up before this ever made it to the market.
Also Nutro and Royal Canine now have their own canning factory. Posted in Itchmo site at some point.
The FDA site still only lists the original cans and pouchs from menu for Nutro and there have been no new recalls or problems.
