I will be doing some work on the site shortly, one of the things I will be adding is a Rescue Organization Page for all the various rescue efforts to be listed. :thumb:
I am looking for a doxie rescue group near the Hudson Valley in NY.
Charlie is a four year old, red doxie who is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. I've had him since he was two months old so the decision to find a new home for him is not an easy one. He has not been raised around children and its been only him and I. There are a few events leading up to this decision.
1. He has always been snippy towards other people and/or dogs, probably due to my not knowing to socialize him well as a puppy. He is snippy towards my neighbors when I take him out to do his business, but seems to do well when we go for walks outside of his territory. He has snipped at me a few times and snipped at a prospective pet sitter when she came to the house to interview us. That incident, in fact, drew blood back in July. Last night he bit me pretty good when I tried to pick him up off the sofa. Granted he was working on a rawhide at the moment.
2. I currently live in military housing of which makes his snippy attribute not a pleasant/socialble thing.
3. I think that Charlie would be better off in a home with other dogs his size. When his back went out in September, I believe it had to do with him and Abbie playing unsupervised more then it had to do with the x-rays showing he had calcified areas between his discs. He has been off his prednisone for a week now and has been doing great.
4. I called one of the local animal shelters this morning about taking him in as a last resort and mentioned that he has been snippy. The lady I talked to mentionied that if he was snippy with her he'd probably be put to sleep and/or maybe that's something I should consider doing anyway. Putting Charlie to sleep is not something I want to do and not something I'd consider doing.
5. He has not been raised around kids or cared for by an adult other then me.
Please let me know of any rescues near me.
Contact DRNA and Almost home that have links listed above. Also do a search for rescue orgs in your area - if there are any - it will show up.

I used to live up in Washington State--I just ran across a link to a Dachshund Rescue organization up there. If you know someone in Eastern Washingon, Eastern Oregon, or Northern Idaho who would like to adopt a Dachshund, it looks like they ought to check out the Dachshund Club/Dachshund Rescue Northwest in Spokane.

Hello!!! Just want to say I think it's great that all the orgs are saving beauitul doxies!! They are loving, soulful friends. I have two and love them to death (even if their barking and soiling on the carpet aggravates me! lol ).
I just want to say though, that all vets should be given info about rescue orgs that allow owners to keep their pets, by paying for operations through payment systems. No owner should ever, ever have to give up their best friend and beloved family member. It's hard for the doxie, who generally loves their family to the point of obsession- to have to ONE: go through an operation and then TWO: be torn away from their home forever- and set in foster homes for periods of time. If the money is there to offer a rescue operation, then it should be used, and then paid back by the owner. Like I said, NO OWNER should be torn away from someone they love.
Again- I thank you for what you do. Thank you for reading my post!!!!
Also I want to say, by using the payment-payback system, an organization will in the end get their funds back and a pet is saved. It's a win-win situation.
My vet NEVER told me their was any options for my sweet little boy. I mourn him to this day. Children (and I have one sweetheart that's two and a baby on the way) aren't put down when they are financially out of range to be saved. There are payment options at hospitals. No child is ever taken from their parent so that they can be saved. This is how it should be for animals too. It breaks my heart to think of any dear pet being torn away from those that they love.
Thanks again!
