Had a scary event this morning that I thought I'd post to prevent other doxie injuries. I opened Schatzie's kennel this morning and was surprised that she didn't come charging out to greet me as she usually does. I looked in there and she was looking out at me all snuggled in her blankets. I let her "sleep in". As I drank my coffee and watched the local news, I heard her making little sounds that I took to be snoring until I muted the TV. It was soft whimpering. When I went to investigate, I noticed that she wasn't "snuggled in" - she was stuck and being choked by the blanket! She had gotten her head stuck in a hole she had chewed through the blanket and her little body was all wrapped up in the blanket. She couldn't get out of the kennel nor could she back up to get her head out. The poor thing! The blanket was tight around her neck and I had to literally tear it so I could get her out of the blanket. I have no idea how long she was like that. I removed the blanket and got rid of it, picked her up and rubbed her back and neck. She licked my face and was so grateful. Take a moment today to check your doxie's bedding. If it's torn or has holes in it that could "trap" him/her, even if it's a favorite blanket, toss it. Your doxie may be momentarily upset, as Schatzie was, but its not worth the possible injury.
She's fine now and the trauma has passed but, boy, had I not decided to have a second cup of coffee, the result could have been much different.
That is scary !!!! So glad all is ok ! Stuff like this sure makes us pay more attention. Good idea to pull all the bedding out and look at it !
How Scary!! Good advice!
Oh my! How Scary!! Thank goodness you are a good mommy and checked on her. Thank you for the great advice!!
Very scary, Buddy's grandfather passed away a few months ago they did not know what was wrong they did a necropsy he had part of his blanket wrapped around his intestine this dog was 10+ in years. Alwys check the blankets. Very glad you checked on your fur kid and got the blanket off of her in time.
Papbouv
I'm sorry to hear about Buddy's papaw. I sometimes worry about the items I don't catch Schatzie eating. I mean, she's a doxie and that's just par for the course, and I do try to keep things away from her, but I'm just not Martha Stewart. Our home is really "lived in". She'll get wood chips from near the fireplace, dustbunnies, socks from the boy's room; she's into everything all the time and I can't watch her every moment of every day. She's even figured out the latch on the puppy gates so my attempts to "contain" her frequently don't work. Scolding her is ineffective - as we all know! - so I just keep a close eye on her and just like when the kids are "too quiet", I know to go see what she's up to.
oh NO!!!!
and point taken. Just gotta remember they are like toddlers. Into all kinds of trubbo and not able to reason their way out of it.
I'm just grateful that the doxies and the bunnies can't open doors and gates!!! LOL!!
Guinness is a dedicated dachshund burrower. My favorite is at night when something gets the three big boys going and from underneath my blankets, somewhere deep in sleep, a muffled yipping can be heard! (The only movement is the blankets fluttering from his breath - no joining in for this old man!)
