Title: Hallie update
Post by: Delia and girls on February 28, 2008, 07:57:11 PM
Hallie and DD still need our rays and prayers. Hallie is spending the night at the vet's in Oregon so they can relieve her pain. The vet said it's a swelling of the spinal cord and it's a matter of controlling the pain and the swelling - no surgery for this condition. Bear in mind, I'm getting this info second hand - DD talked to Ron this evening before I got home from work. DD happened to run into a good friend at the vet's (is that fate, or what?!) and is spending the night with her. I just can't believe this is happening!!!!!

Rays still headed her way. That sounds really similar to Penny's spinal cord problem! Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update and thank goodness Dee Dee is staying with someone. It sounds like what Oliver did the other year in a bigger way.
I tried to ring her last night our time, but no answer.

Rays and hugs

I still don't really understand it he said it happes in somedogs and they don't know why it will pro a ly keep happeninLookin  back I can pinpoin several small episodes of this. This  is by far  the worst. they have her full of steroids so hope that will cut the pain. they were prepared gto do surgery today I was to the point I was lookin forward to that to et thisfixed. I was really disappoied to hear awhat thisis I ha e  googled but canno find aything abot it does anone havve any idea what this is?Neurologist w as't telling t o o much about it just that they hae seen it in other dogs and it usually keeps reoccurring.

Yes sorry for waking you , forgot about the time thingy in the haste of the moment. As for the typing, I do think that lap top keyboards some of the keys are more sensitive than others and I'm sticking to that theory. God must have been  looking down and keeping an eye on you for your friend to show up.
Ms H is in good hands, and its probably for the better you did not see her as it would upset you both, but keep your chin up we are all in there praying and sending rays. Amy says she can let Haillie borrow her play pen if she needs it.

Well, through my Hallie tears I am with you all the way, DD!  I know exactly what it is like to be away from my baby or babies, and I didn't/don't like it one bit, either! I am rather fond of coincidences, myself - what are the odds that I would be next door at school to a police officer's stepdaughter a couple of years and then find out how much help she could be when I desperately needed someone with exactly the type of information she had?   (And she helped me every step of the way through filing papers, too!)  How wonderful that this person was put in your path just when you needed to be close to HBB!

We're all keeping you and Hallie in our thoughts and prayers.   Hallie is a true dachshund, she'll beat this through utter will.   I think Glenda once called it "Blood and Iron"...a bit too teutonic of a reference, but very appropriate.

Delia - thanks so much for updating us.  I almost called you last night to see if you had heard from dd - but it was really late when I got home.  We are sending powerful Texas rays along with you that they can get this pain under control.  SO glad dd is able to stay close.  Please let us know if you hear anymore !

When I responded a minute ago, I had just read Delia's update and then saw dd's.... hang in there girl - how scary !!!  I wonder if it is similar to what Penny suffered (as Kari said) - maybe she can give some more information about Penny's condition and may help you ask some questions.  We are all praying for you and Hallie and will be waiting for any updates.  Hugs to you.....

We just got home, I am too tired to re-read what I wrote so excuse me if I repeat thigs, the vet showed me her xrays and CET scan. Her spinal canal or column or cord or whatever from lumbar (mid back) to tail is dilated larger than it should be. She was most likely born wiht it. I guess that irritates the nerve roots somehow causing all this pain. He doesn't know the name so I don't even know how to research it. it is quite rare he said, he's been a neurologist for over 30 years and only seen a few dogs with this. right now it looks like we need to just really douse her with steroids when I see it coming on, although now on day 4 of dexasone she is still quite painful, cried and hunched up when I tried to get her out of her crate in the van. She looks like a truck ran over her, when the vet brought her out to me I figured she'd kiss me all over and wag her tail but she just slowly turned her head away from me. Her whole back half is shaved. I was looking at other dachshunds in there with shaved backs and stitched enviously wishing we could have had that kind of surgery and taken care of it rather than have this horrible thing looming forever (this neurologist fenestrated the entire lumbar). Never thought I'd be wishing for a disc problem and surgery!

I don't know what we'll do at this point I'm about freakin' ready to give up. I've been through a lot of losses with my family and furfamily but Hallie is the one that will break my heart by far the most.

Oh dd my heart breaks for you.  Both of you need some serious rest and don't give up hope.   We are here for both of you sending prayers and rays in massive forces.  Hallie will come through.  When Kari reads your update, I am sure she will send you some specifics on what Penny went through.  Please take care of yourself, so you can take care of your baby girl.  Soft smoochies to Hallie and big hugs to you.

Dee Dee, keep the faith..........she is probably drugged to eyeballs, so you and her keep calm. Most of us know what it feels like. Think of it this way if she had the "normal " Dachie back and had surgery you still wait for the next time, when she recovered from the surgery. I know as it runs through my mind every time Amy runs, so you just watch her a bit more closely, and cross that bridge when you come to it.
Get sleep and let time take its course. And just keep venting here, as I think it helps. I wish I was closer.
Big HUgs
Roberta
Amy to Ms H so you've now become a member of the reverse mohawk group, please remember your mum LOves you.
PPS Did you get a report from the neuro, if not why don't you ring and ask them to fax or email all the details that he spoke about,  so you have all the details, is he sending a report to your vet.

Dear Dee Dee,
I know that you are probably exhausted and devastated.  Please do not give up! Both you and Hallie can get through this.  Just because the Dr said it is a permanent condition, does not mean it isn't treatable.  The good thing is now you know what you are dealing with.
I truly and deeply feel for you and understand what its like to be dealt with such a blow. Please do not underestimate the strength of a dachshund........they are born fighters!   When we found out Franky had cancer (less than a year after IVDD surgery) I was a wreck and actually started losing my hair.  But we persisted with treatment, and he beat the devil and is as spry as a puppy again.
You have a HUGE international "family" here that will stand by your side and help you through this.
Sending lots of rays and positive energy to you both from Pennsylvania.
   :comfort:

Sounds like you both need to rest and try and call this doctor tell him you need the name of the condition Hallie has so you can make informed decisions that will affect both of the rest of your life's.Sometime western doctors do not know everything sometimes the eastern doctors know this also that might help better.? Just a thought know your head must be spinning if you can step back and look at the problem from all sides does that Doger List anyone there know what might be going on with Miss Hallies back. Some times when I know nothing I just google what I do know sorta like a stab in the dark at it and sometimes I come up with interesting reads about things. Sending Hugs, Prayers and Good Thoughts your way for you and Miss Hallie.

Oh No! I was so hoping from better news. You must be exhausted! Is there any possibility for a second opinion from a neurologist that might have more experience with her condition? Please don't lose your faith. We are here for you and anything you need just ask.

It sounds like what we experienced with Penny is probably a different condition - her spinal cord was inflamed because her immune system was attacking it (inflammatory  focal myelitis). Regardless, I'll post a link with more information just in case. Within this post WW Post about Penny (http://www.wienerwritings.com/forum/index.php?topic=2800.0") there is information at her condition. Please let me know if i can help you in any way.

Dee Dee, oh my dear friend!  I've missed some days stopping in and now I see this.  I'm heartbroken.  One thing though.  DON'T GIVE UP!  Give the treatment a chance and just let Hallie rest.  I know you must be going freakin' crazy but STAY STRONG for her.  Praying with all my heart and soul for our lovely Hallie and for you.  Remember.....DON'T GIVE UP!
