Title: Seizures? UPDATE
Post by: Barb on February 27, 2008, 06:43:43 AM
My Brandy had a seizure last night...... it was scary, but thank heavens for this board, I was aware of what was happening - or I thought that I knew.

She was asleep next to me on the couch and at 10:30, I turned off the tv and asked the kids if they were ready to go outside and go pp and then go nite-nite.   I picked up Brandy and she yelped.  I set her down on the floor quickly - I thought I had pinched her.  Her legs were splayed out in all directions and head was turned to one side. She was trying to go in a circle - but it was like she had no control over her body.  Of course, first thing I thought of was her back, but she wasn't presenting like she was in pain.  I picked her up and put her on the couch and she immediatly layed down and just stayed there.  Her eyes appeared to be glazed over and I just sat and petted her.  After about 10 minutes, she started shaking real bad.  I set her down on the ground and she was able to stand wobbly and took a couple steps, but her body was still kind of sideways.

Of course, I was freaking out !  I put on my clothes and was going to bundle her off to the emergency vet and decided to wait about 30 minutes.  I held her and stroked her and she finally seemed like she came back to me and her body relaxed.  I was torn, I didn't know whether to take her or not.  I got on line and did some searching and the information I found was similar to what happened to her.  The information said once the seizure is past - that she would just want to sleep and that was the case.  I slept in my clothes with the bathroom light on so I could see her all night.  At one point she moved off of her pillow and snuggled next to me - standardly what happens each night.  This morning she was fine - she peed, pooped and was ready to go for our little morning walk, and she ate her breakfast fine.  They are on the futon as I am typing this and Brandy just barked for me to come over and pay attention to them !

I had taken her in last Sat and they drew blood and tested her urine.  The blood work came back fine, and the vet siad her urine had some crystals in it and we just needed to watch her closely.   I am waiting on the vet to call me now - I want to talk to him before I leave for work.

Just asking for some good thoughts and always appreciate any information you can offer !!!  Something is going on with my little girl and it is scary !!!

Thanks for listening !

***  My vet called back - and he feels that the seizure wasn't an epileptic seizure - he called it something else - I wrote it down at home, but can't remember for the life of me.  He said he thought it was most likely related to a drop in blood pressure.  She was sound asleep when I picked her up, and he said he thought the yelp was not out of pain, but surprise and that her blood pressure was at a low point and her body couldn't catch up.  He didn't want to prescribe anything at this time - just wanted to watch and wait to see.  He said keep her calm and don't change her routine at all.   So with heart in hand, I came to work - it was so hard to leave her !!!  But the 2 hrs she was up this morning - she was my same little girl.  I have noted on a log what happened and will keep track.  I really like my vet - he talked to me for about 15 minutes this morning.   Would still appreciate anyone else's experiences......  and always appreciate good thoughts for my kids!

Poor Rudy, he didn't know what was going on.  Last night when I was getting dressed at 11:00, and went to put the doggie car seat in the car, he thought we were going somewhere.  Then we didn't and we all slept in different places in the bed - he curled up close to Brandy and he usually curls up to me - so he knew something was out of sorts.  I just love them both so much........

Again - thanks for listening !

Gosh, that would be scary.  It sounds like you did all the right things though.  Rays coming that no seizures more pop up at you.

How scary!! I don't have any experience with seizures but we are sending major rays Brandy's way. I know there are some people here that do have experience so I'm sure you will get some help. Please let us know what the vet says!

I remember the first time Sam Angel had a seizure I was into panic mode immediately.   Then he didn't have one for about six  months, but it was mild and just hugging him seemed to calm him down until it subsided.  One day, I was home on a weeks sick leave and had scheduled the boys to go have their heartworm tests, but the day we were to go to the vet Sam went into seizure mode and wouldn't stop.  Well, we went into the vet immediately and the vet got to see firt hand what was going on.   She examined him, took blood and did a few test and gave me some meds in case it happened again.  Funny thing was just as we were leaving the seizure stopped and he never had one after that.

Eddie has been lucky because the only problem he's had beside his back has been allergies to dust and getting bit in he ear by a squirrel.  And my Gizmo Angel kitty had a heart murmur, but never needed meds we just had to make sure he didn't overexert himself in ho/humid weather and if he did he would have to be made to relax, and for Gizmo kitty - he thought he was a dog, that just wasn't possible.

Marcia - thanks for the info - it is so hard to watch !!!  Put I was SO thankful for people posting here about their experiences and I knew I had to stay calm for her.  When Sam-Angel had his seizures - do you remember exactly how he acted?

Too funny about Gizmo..... thought he was a dog !!!

Sounds silly but it sounds like what happened to me we were coming back from Canada and the pilot set down really hard and quick at Hawihi  (?spelling) I did not pass out but I don't remember anything and could not stand etc. They at first did not want me to reboard for Sydney, but I insisted as if all went pear shaped I could train it back to Melbourne. They put it down to my low blood pressure and the vagious nerve getting whacked with the landing. If Brandy felt like that golly it whacked me for 6 for a few days.

So wee one take it easy

Poor Brandy and poor mom!  Rays to both of you!

Berman continues to have seizures every now and then - but not often enough to medicate (or so I think). I've gotten pretty used to them and just try to comfort him till he works his way out.

I still think it's crazy how he knows when one is coming on and will come find me or Alec. Just last Sunday, we went out for coffee and when I opened the front door, Berman came running out.  I freaked out and dropped everything, but he had stopped in the middle of the yard. I picked him up and when we got inside, the seizure started.

Berman's only last 5-7 minutes and he gets real stiff and shakes. He tries to kiss me and he actually cries - big tears roll out of his eyes.   After the seizuer is over, he shakes it off and gives me tons of kisses!

I know when he started, I found great comfort from others on this board who have experienced seizures with their own furbabies. Oh and good job remaining calm!  When Berman had his first one, I thought he was choking and did all the things you're supposed to do with a choking dog which are all the things you don't do with a seizing dog!

Thanks everyone for your insight.   I hate for things like this to happen, but it definately puts me on alert - I am much more aware of what they are doing and watch closer.  Brandy was fine when I went home (I couldn't wait to run out of the office last night !!!).  We did our normal dinner stuff and then I gave them each a chew stick.  Brandy takes hers back and chews on the big bed.  Rudy chews his in the living room.  I went back about 15 times to check on Brandy and to not scare her I would start talking as I went down the hall.  When I got to the bedroom her tail was wagging fast and she was chewing away.

Will just take a day at a time and watch her like a hawk and if she is sleeping soundly, I will wake her very gently !!!!

Jenny - Brandy's episode sounded like Berman's - she stiffened up and her legs were splayed out and her body was kind of contorted.  She then started shaking badly.

Thanks everyone !

That's got to be one of the most frightening things to watch! I'm sorry to hear it happened, but it sounds like all is back to normal now. I hope it stays that way.

I am surprised my sister Merion did not post something here.  Her Zeke had seizures most of his life, and some of them were pretty bad.  He was on  pheno and most of the time he got that i think it was every 4 or 6 hours.   He lived to be 15 1/2 and Merion and I both said a few times, maybe it was the pheno that kept him looking so young!!  He was a red doxie, and contrary to my Twinkie who was getting a white face when I got her at age 3, Zeke had very few even at 15!!

The seizures are scarey, and one thing that does need to be watched out for is if they keep going into seizure after seizure. they will come out of it, and then go right back into one, and if it just keeps happening, that can be dangerous.  I don't think that happened to Zeke very many times.  Merion also had valium that she could give him if it appeared there might be concern that he was going to have one.

I can't believe it's been 3 days since I checked in here.  Whoa!  Barb, please give gentle kisses to Princess Brandy from Mark, me and the Madderoo.  Hope it was just a one time thing.  Maybe she ate something that might have caused a chemical reaction of some kind?  Rays coming to our Brandy girl.
