Title: Meet Phoebe
Post by: Dachsmack on February 21, 2008, 12:26:41 PM
Here's our newest four-legged, Phoebe. She is a fawn-colored French Bulldog, 5 years old.

She is just the sweetest thing, settling in nicely. Dachshunds will always be my first love, but I have to admit it adds spice to life to have multiple breeds. We now have five doxies, two basset hounds, one Clumber spaniel and now the Frenchie -- and of course our two-legged Lily.  :angel13:

Melanie and I consider Phoebe a rescue, as a breeder was trying to dump her to the first folks who came along. She had to be spayed when she had complications during a C-section, so of course she no longer fit in the any breeding program.

Phoebe has already given Lily multiple kisses and seems to be a wonderful family dog -- well adjusted. I think our extended family thinks Melanie and I are crazy, but we can't help it. It's a lot of hard work, but also just so much fun.  :walk2:

She is adorable lucky girl to land with you guys! It does frustrate me what we do to these breeds...frenchies, bulldogs...can't have puppies naturally, that should tell us we have gone a little to far to the extreme somewhere. Frenchies are wonderful little dogs though I have a friend who has a big kennel of them and shows them, they are all so happy and snorty! I love them. Congrats on the new baby, I didn't realize you have a clumber too, you really do have a nice mix of pups!

One of he classic dogs named Phoebe was the bulldog pet of a vet in the books "All Creatures Great and Small."  Dr. Granville Bennett, a larger than life character in the James Herriot books, had a yorkie and a bullog, who he dotingly referred to as "Phoebles." Great name, great pictures, great dog!!  MAZAL TOV!!!

Looks like we might have to find Phoebe a new home. She is very territorial and aggressive with the dachshunds. We have read that French bulldogs are often better with no other dogs or maybe just one or two more, particularly with the opposite sex. She does not bite, is great with me, Melanie and the baby. But she will chase down a doxie and pin them down to get her point across -- do not invade my space!

I contacted a French bulldog rescue in South Florida and they were very understanding of our predicament with so many dogs. We plan to keep Phoebe until a suitable foster home can be found. We might even try to adopt her out ourselves. The doxies are learning to just avoid her, but that means not coming into the room where I am, for instance, if Phoebe is her first. And that's not fair to them.

It's an interesting experience. But Phoebe has been just wonderful with other people she has met, just craves attention and loves to play and, for the most part, is a fun dog. She'll have no trouble adapting. Melanie and I thought it would be best to find her a new home now before we and she get too attached.

I think we need to stick to doxies and bassets.
