Title: Schatzie ate the aloe - Dangerous houseplants?
Post by: poochadoo on January 31, 2008, 08:03:41 AM
This morning I left Schatzie out in the sunroom while I answered the phone.  I came back about 10 minutes later to find she had chewed up 3 little leaf ends of a large aloe vera plant.  Actually, I did not notice the plant right away, but she was acting guilty so I know enough to look around, especially at the one thing she won't look at in the room.  I bathed her this morning with aloe vera dog shampoo, so it's not bad for her skin, but do I need to find a place up high for this plant in case she's got a taste for it?  Is aloe vera dangerous in a doxie's tummy? She isn't acting ill, just guilty.  Any ideas about what common houseplants are a potential hazard for her?

Here is a list from the ASPCA of Toxic plants - http://tinyurl.com/ozy9a. Aloe is on there but I don't know what amount is toxic for her weight. I would give their hotline a call at (888) 426-4435 or call you vet to find out what you should do. You may need to give her hydrogen peroxide to make her throw it up.

Thank you so MUCH!  I had no idea that many of the plants I have here are horrible for dogs.  She can't help herself, so I'm taking today to move those to higher ground.  Every animal owner should have that aspca link bookmarked.  I think Schatzie nibbled then spit it all out, but it's up and out of her reach now.  No sense in continuing a hazardous situation. Thanks for the info!!!

No problem! People laugh at us and think we are crazy when I have said we had to "Penny-Proof" our house! She will get into anything. I left my gym bag on the ground one day and she chewed up my new noise canceling earphones that Drew had bought me  :verdict:

You know, I've "puppy proofed" too, but I just never thought about the plants.  I mean, during the holidays, I do not bring in pointsettias because they are toxic and Scahtzie is drawn to anything new in the house.  The plants were here before she was and I just didn't think about them.  She's been interested before but never actually chewed on one.  Boy, I know better now.  I hope everyone reads this and makes their environment safer for their doxies.

Do you think you ought to call an Emergency Vet. Hospital in your area to ask questions about Schatzie ingesting the Aloe???  Just to be SAFE!
