Title: "Animals in Translation" - Dr. Temple Grandin
Post by: poochadoo on January 30, 2008, 10:00:25 AM
Not exactly dachshund-specific, but if you love animals, this is a must read book.  Dr. Grandin herself is profoundly autistic but through her discovery of her unique relationship with animals she is able to give the rest of us a glimpse inside behavior we may not understand.  As an educator, it gave me incredible insight on the inner emotional life of autistic children, the sometimes inexplicable behavior of my dog and I learned a great deal about myself.  I was reminded of this book as I saw the "doxie-view point" of a path through the snow in someone's yard on this site.  The walls of the path towered over the heads of the two little dogs.  My little dog has had a few "accidents" in the house lately, waiting for me to leave the room before she commited her "crime".  It was obvious that she could hold it, so that isn't the issue, she just didn't want to go out to her pen, a place she normally really likes.  I took a doxie eye-view out there and lo and behold - I went out to her pen, shoveled AROUND the outside of the pen to increase her field of vision and suddenly she was so much more comfortable there.
Sometimes we need to be reminded to see things from the view point of others.  I recommend the book highly for teachers, parents, and those who love animals.
