In cleaning out my mom's belongings, I came across my dad's birth certificate. Dad was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His parents came from Europe - I always thought from Austria. We used to tease him because his German was so different. It was like the French making fun of Cajun! Imagine my surprise when I saw that both his parents were from an part of Europe that no longer exists as a separate region, but whose name is still part of the lexicon.
It's too bad that Dad is passed away - I would love to have said, "Hey, guess what, Dad? Your parents were from Pomerania. That makes you. . . a Pomeranian!"
Dad might not be laughing up in heaven, but I sure am!!!

"Smile, John." "Like hell I will!!"
I can look them up on the census--starting in 1930 and going backward. Also, grandparent's immigration may be on-lin, as well at ancestry.com.
PM me with dad's full name and year of birth and city he lived in 1930--if alive in that year, if not give mother and father (street address if ya got it) and his mother's and father's names. Sometimes you get kewl bonus info!!
I found out my dad is also from Austria, also Poland, also Ukraine--as all these nations at one time governed the Carpathian Mountains where his folks had lived for 500 hundred years. Daddy is a Ruthenian-- and I know this becasue I found his father's WWI draft card!
Pomeranian! Ha ha. Any dalmations out there?
