Title: Greenacres Boys' Checkin In.....
Post by: DeeanDave on January 28, 2008, 08:04:05 PM
And boy, howdy, did we get the snow!!  This is Sarge and Duggie reportin' in........It started to snow Saturday morning around 11:30 a.m. and snowed continuously for 24 hours!  We gots 17 inches of snow in that 24 hour period!  Way too deep for us boys.....Mom was out every couple of hours clearing the back deck and a teeny area for us to do our bizness.......She said no race track around the back yard right now!  Here are some piccys that Pop took today......

The first pic is our backyard......that is way too deep for us to roam around in
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/Sargey021699/IMG_2854.jpg)

The second pic is our view from the living room window that faces North
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v316/Sargey021699/IMG_2856.jpg)

And the last pic is of the mountain that has grown in the middle of the Cul-de-Sac (hence Cul-de-Sac Mountain).  The picture was taken from our front deck -- that's our paperbox.....and the neighbor's house across the street.  This is only some the snow from the cul-de-sac that has six houses around it....every house has a mound of snow.....ours in in the front yard......

Dee here: We've got mounds of snow all over the place.....the front yard is full along with the backyard area and along the fence line....edge of the deck.......we're running outta room to put all this white stuff!  And, it is suppose to start snowing again tonight and dump another 2-4 inches and more snow the rest of the week!

All the school districts closed, along with the state universities and private colleges and day cares, and so on ..... you name it, it was probably closed.  The county offices were all closed as well as the city offices except for emergency personnel.  But the state kept all their offices open!  So, I got to go to work!  And, to really make it a hair raising experience, I had to drive to a temporary duty station today which was 40 miles one way on roads that were solid compact snow with a nice glazing of ice over the top of them along with frozen slush.  It took me two hours to drive the 40 miles which under normal conditions only takes about 20-30 minutes.  I left home this morning at 6 a.m. to get there by 8 a.m.  And, while the major arterials were plowed, there was no sand or de-icers on the roads.  The freeway became a parking lot -- due to all the accidents, the traffic came to a standstill.  I decided that I wanted off of the freeway so inched by way to the next exit and got off and then took an alternate route to the office that I was assigned to work in today.  Normally, I work out of downtown Spokane.  Took me two hours to get home.......I again avoided the freeway.....there were a lot of flashing blue and red lights along the freeway!    All the school districts are again going to be closed tomorrow........Cars were slippin and slidin all over the place.  My Saturn handled just wonderful......and I took it slow like you're suppose to!  The boys are not too fond of the snow -- they like it but not this much.....it really limits where they can roam in the back.  The side roads are a mess and so deep....the snow plows are concentrating only on the main arterials and emergency routes right now...and they are working 24/7.  So, we're hanging in there but can someone please do the dance that will make the snow stop and bring on the warm sunshine to melt this stuff!  The temps here are in the low to mid teens!   Now, could I have some cheese with my whine!!! Have a good one, everyone!  Dee

Weeow Dee! I heard you guys got dumped on but man! That is awful stuff to be out in. But so beautiful! I have been wanting so bad to take photos of deep snow scenery for backgrounds for paintings but we don't get near that amount (and I am too chicken to drive the roads to the mountain this time of year ). You guys must be getting really tired of this stuff it's been there for a long time now! Be careful out there and tell Sarge and Duggie that Hallie says to stay in and stay warm!

Oh my goodness!!!!!  I bet that was so scary for you to have to go into work, especially to an office 40 miles away...I am glad you made it there and back home safe and sound.  You all stay in your warm houses and stay safe!!!!

ps:  It is very beautiful though, isn't it.

I'll work on getting a piccy of doxies in the snow.  Right now, they just go out and do their business and zip right back in!  Dee

Hi Terri,

I shovel off the back deck and the ramps (the ramp from the back door down the deck is covered but the others are not) and also have a mid-size area just off the deck that I keep clear for the boys. They are a bit put out that they cannot go into the garden area or the yard!  It's way too deep for them now -- I usually have a race track path around the yard for them but at the speed the snow is falling, that has not happened yet! As more snow comes, the mounds get higher!  It's snowing again and coming down with zest!  We're suppose to get another 2-4 inches but the way it's coming down, I'm thinking more than 2-4 inches will arrive!  We've got two inches already that has fallen this morning.  Dee

Title: "kaniktshaq moritlkatsio astuniartoq"
Post by: Leslie on January 29, 2008, 12:17:33 PM
whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!  I borrow the following from an article by Cecil Adams on "The Straight Dope" webpage.  He was responding to a query about whether Eskimos had 100 different words for snow.  An excerpt:

"In my spare time I have been attempting to construct an Eskimo sentence in my basement, such as will be suitable for the season. I have not get it perfected yet, but it is coming along pretty well, and with a little work it might pass for the genuine article. So far I have: kaniktshaq moritlkatsio atsuniartoq.

When completed, this sentence will proclaim: "Look at all this freaking snow." At present it means: "Observe the snow. It fornicates." This is not poetic, but it is serviceable, and I intend to employ it at the next opportunity. Anyone who feels it would alleviate his or her tension is invited to do likewise."

"Kaniktshaq moritlkatsio astuniartoq!!!"

I'm envious, and my wife, too. Know someone who works in Seattle and I'm looking into a job out there. I doubt anything will come of it, but you never know.

I can't get over the amount. Once, 20 years ago, Greenville got 12 inches of snow. Imagine 12 inches of snow in a city that had only a couple of snow plows at the time! It shut us down for quite a while. The next year we had 10 inches. We've had one or two 6-8 inch snows since, but not in the last 10 years. The piles of snow in the cuddlesac reminds me of the year we had so much here. There were piles of snow all over the place. I couldn't imagine it now, since the city is so much larger. It would truly be a nightmare!
I hope the guys get to have a place to roam again soon. I know cabin fever has got to be awful for them
Be careful out there driving. Watch out for all the big guys!

Hey guys!  If it gets too deep, you should put out an emergency call for the "Lawm Mower Aliens" to snowblow a racetrack for the military.  It could be an "Area 51" top secret operation!  SSLOL!!
