Toby is doing a little better this morning! He has not been vomiting since yesterday afternoon. His fever is down to low grade which is a huge improvement! They had been giving him something to settle his stomach which seems to have worked. He was able to eat some canned dog food this morning and so far he has kept it down! He is still very weak. He can't stand up without falling down but he is lifting his head up and wagging his tail! I'll take that! :)
If he doesn't vomit today and if his fever doesn't spike again they will take him off the IV around 2:00 this afternoon. Our vet is not giving me any idea of when he will let him come home but right now I am just happy that he is doing a little bit better. It's been a rough couple of days for him.
Thank you ALL for your good wishes and prayers. Having this support has helped more than you could know.
I also wanted to clarify one thing. This really was a unique situation. Toby HAD to get out of New Orleans and it was a scramble to get everything together. I have nothing but respect for the folks involved in Florida Dachshund Rescue. They were transporting numberous pups to various homes around Florida and they did a wonderful job. I suspect that they assumed that I knew about the aftercare of a Heartworm positive dog. We then took Toby to our Vet for a checkup. He assumed that I knew about the aftercare from the Rescue. It was after he got sick that our vet asked about his activity and such. In any case I do NOT blame anyone . There was a bit of a communication breakdown but under the circumstances it is certainly understandable.
If there is blame at all it lies with the horrible excuse for a human being that abused and neglected this sweet boy! Heartworm is HORRID. It is 100% PREVENTABLE! I do know that I will never be a single day late with preventative EVER. I guess maybe that's the lesson here. Again....I thank you all for your support.
Hey Terri,
I'm so glad he's doing better & that you are feeling better
about it all too. I know he's getting much better care & tons of love with you.
God knew who to send him too. Our prayers are still with
you both for his speedy recovery & home coming.
Oh Terri - I am so thankful he is doing better. I so agree with you - the awful human that put him through this by not taking care of him should be.....well, can't say what I would like to happen....... So glad sweet Toby found his way to you...... :comfort: Sending rays and prayers that he continues to improve and will soon get to come home.
Terri
