Title: Daisy Surgery Update
Post by: luvmydoxnds on January 09, 2008, 06:07:52 AM
Hello Everyone,

Thanks so much for all the prayers and thoughts.  They found their way to Daisy.  She had the surgery yesterday and came through with flying colors.  Her surgeon said that there was a lot of disc material that needed to be removed from the rupture and that he was able to get 90% of it out.  He didn't feel comfortable getting the other 10% (which should not be a problem for her) because there was a blood vessel running over top of it.  He felt that the risk of rupturing that blood vessel was too great.  He also went ahead and fenestrated the other disks so there should be no more problems for her in the future.  He expects her to make a complete recovery!!!  We are ecstatic!!!!
I called and checked on her this morning and they said she did very well through the night.  When they took her to go potty she was slowly walking around (which is great news for us).  The nurse told me this morning what a sweet girl she is and that she can tell that she's extremely nervous so I can't wait to get her back home.  She does not like being away from her family.  Her dachsie sister on the other is going crazy looking for her.  She had a rough night too.  The surgeon is going to call later today and let me know if I can bring her home today.  Thanks again so much for all of your prayers and support in this trying time for us.  I'll keep you posted on her progress.  Tina

Hello Again Everyone!!!!

Just wanted to give you a quick update on Daisy's progress.  She came home on Wednesday afternoon and I could tell that she did not enjoy the ride home.  I tried to avoid the potholes on the beltway but anyone who lives around here knows how hard that is.  Her first night home was a little rough and I think in trying to be so careful in picking her up I got my hands a little to close to her incision.  She howled and I felt awful.  I'm so used to picking her up a certain way trying to be careful with her back that I forgot about touching her to close to the neck.  I truly felt like a horrible mom for doing that.  She's doing much better now!!!!  this morning she was up and ready to go.  When I took her out her tail was back to standing straight up and she even did a little shake out there.  I also noticed that she is no longer dragging that front paw!!!  I can't wait for her to be able to get back in the bed with us....sleeping on the couch is killing me:)  I think I will be the once with back problems next (ha/ha).  She's still on prednisone and tramadol but she will be off of all of that by next weekend.  She goes back to the neurosurgeon the week of the 21st to get her staples out.  That ought to be fun.  She is not going to like that one bit.  The one nurse that took care of her while she was in the hospital made me laugh she asked me if Daisy could come back soon and accept her "Oscar" for "best Drama Queen" award.  I cracked up.  I know my daisy and yes she is a big baby when she gets sick.  I know she was really hurting with all of this but trust me I know she's going to ride this out for as long as she can.  That's okay though 'cause I will play right along with her.  By the way Jasmine is so happy to have her sister back.  All she can do is lick her through the playpen mesh.  It is so cute.  Have a great weekend...I know I will:)

That is wonderful news! I'm so glad to hear that she is progressing so well. I can relate on the picking them up after surgery...I was terrified to pick her up after her back surgery!

:apls: :apls: :apls: :apls:  Fantastic news Tina that Daisy is doing so well.  I am soooo happy!!! You go, girl!!!  I was petrified to pick up Zoe when she had her back surgery.  I actually slept on the floor on a bunch of blankets when Zoe was on her crate rest....oh my...what we won't do for our babies!!!  I wouldn't worry about Daisy getting her staples out....piece of cake!!  Sleeping in your own bed sounds good!!  I would love to see pictures of Jasmine licking Daisy through the mesh of the playpen....

Drew and I went to walmart and bought a queen sized air mattress. We moved the dining room table and set up camp in the dining room! Our bedroom is upstairs and her recovery area was downstairs!!

I can relate on the picking them up after surgery...I was terrified to pick her up after her back surgery!

Gretchen had surgery 4 years ago with 2 minor back episodes since the surgery. I STILL have a very hard time picking her up when she's laying down. And she seems to know this - she turns on her back and does her 'wet noodle' impression.

So good to hear that Daisy is progressing so well! They are tough little beings!

As for the sleeping arrangements...we are lucky in that she really doesn't mind her crate. Unfortunately, we've been through this with her so many times, that we have a routine. She spends the day in the expen in the living room and at night, we put her in her crate in our bedroom. She is a very good little patient. The trick is plenty of warm, soft blankies and chewies.
