Title: Gretchen's 'off' day yesterday
Post by: Delia and girls on December 18, 2007, 03:25:19 PM
Wellllll, let me start with saying she is the brighter of my 2...sad, very sad!!!! First, we took them to Lowe's and Home Depot  yesterday. Ilsa went in her bag/purse and Gretchie rode in the shopping cart. Just as we were going to pay at Home Depot, Gretchie fell out of the cart! I don't know how, Ron was pushing it and was in front of me. I just heard him say 'Whoa!' and saw her fly to the floor. Luckily, she had her hug a dox harness on and his reflexes were fast enough that he  grabbed her leash and she just hung there as he grabbed her. At least she never hit the floor, but still. THEN...we took them for a long walk around the neighborhood and as Ilsa and I were coming up on Ron and Gretchie, I see Gretchie stalking. I look over and just as I see it, she takes off and is all over it (she's on a flexi). It's a little kids helmet for a bicycle.  We were both laughing at her and she kept looking at us like..."Yeah, like that's never happened to you!" As a friend of mine told me...she's needing a field trial to get that need to hunt out of her system. We haven't made it to any field trials this year. Yep, that's my field champion and master earthdog! I've got her and me signed up for a tracking class but that doesn't start 'til March. I guess helmets will have to do until then!

It's been about 24 hours since she fell out of the shopping cart and so far she's none the worse for wear. Another 24 hours and I'll be breathing easier. It's a rule DeeDee and I have - whenever an incident like this happens, they have 48 hours to let us know they're REALLY hurt. After that, they are to be fine - that's the rule! This WOULD happen to my post back surgery pupper! Not that I wouldn't worry had it happened to Ilsa, just a little more because of Gretchen's back history.

This so reminds me of a very funny story. . .

When my (now ex-) husband and I were traveling back from Kansas to California, we had our cat, Buckwheat with us and our irish Setter, Becky.  Buckwheat was on a leash, since she was a kitten and prone to jumping out of the car.  This was 1974 - they had just come out with car seats for kids - forget pets!

So we are stopped at a Denny's parking lot and I am looking at the map and Sam is checking out the newspaper.  His window is open a few inches and Buckwheat decides to slip out quietly.  She sidles up onto his shoulder and gingerly puts her paws on the window.  Out she goes and slowly lowers herself down the glass until she lets go.  Only two inches and she's suddenly at the end of the leash.  The collar is under her jaw, not her throat, so Sam figures, "O.K., cat you wanna hang out for a little bit?  Bet you won't do that again."

All at once on my side this person starts banging on the windshield.  "Mister, mister, your cat!  Look!"

Without missing a beat, my husband say, "Thanks, I know."   And goes back to reading the paper.  Needless to say the horrified passer-by is staring at ME.  I look over, see the cat, slap my husband's arm and hiss, "For goodness sake, Sam, reel in that stupid cat!  That man is going to call the cops!"

The cat gets reeled in, my husband rubs his sore arm, and I peel out of the Denny's parking lot at fast as I calmly can!

:2funny:  Oh my gosh Karen!  Your poor cat!!!   I'm glad Gretchen seems to be doing okay. I would be freaking out about that too!   My heart skipped a beat just reading about it.    :xfinger:  I hope the next 24 hours go well.  And I love your 48 hours rule, I agree it simply has to be that way.

Poor Buckwheat! I bet he didn't try that again!  I bet it was a riot watching him being sneaky.

Gretchie is doing well today. I think she'll be fine. Well, that is, except for her pride! I think she'll be ready for tracking, come March. Thing is, neither one of us have ever done it. I guess we'll figure it out. It gets her outside, which is what she loves.

I am so glad that Gretchen is ok!! Oh and how did you get them to let you into the stores? Around here they won't let us take our pups in.

Karen! OMG is right!! Now that would have made the money on American Funniest Videos if it was around back then!!  :2funny:

Have you tried Home Depot and Lowes? They both let them in around here. I have a feeling there are more places that would, but I'd have to test them with Ilsa (hubby too embarrassed to get kicked out). I won't leave Gretchen alone, so between finding a day that Ron is off and can stay with her, and him being AWAKE when he's with her (he works nights) and errands that get run when we're both off...well, you get the picture. Some day I'm going to try the mall that's close to here. The other day, Ron and I went to a Penney's that recently went up and as Ron was leaving to go to another store, he sees a woman with a yorkie going in. Of course, he had to call and tell me and, of course, I had to roam the store, in search of her. When I found her, I looked around at the employees and either they didn't see the pup or didn't care. They are definitely on my list to try.

When my friend and I take Chloe (her doxie) and Ilsa to the nursing home (the first Sat of every month), we go early and shop and eat lunch at a mall that's on the way. I've been very pleasantly surprised at the reaction of customers and employees. This mall is in a hoity toity part of Dallas, Tx so the stores are high end and the customers are well to do.

I think if we use common sense and carry them and stay away from the food areas, this country might be more like Europe, in that respect.
