Do you think this would be OK and if so what size, we have the big airline crate which is heavy and clumbersome and occupies most of the back seat.
Roberta
It looks good to me, Roberta. As for the size... how much does Amy weigh? Would you use it for fast trips around town or long trips? I'm sure someone that uses crates in the car would be more helpful than me. Gretchen and Ilsa use car seats. But if I were to use crates, I would consider this one. I DO have 2 nylabone crates that I use occassionaly at dog events (Ilsa climbs out of the expen when we're not in her sight). It folds down also. Here's a link. I have the older model but this shows how it folds down.

Its for all trips, but going up country its for about 3 hours, the one we have is the airline approved and she does not get much air movement. We had been told that she has to travel in one due to her back injury. Someone had suggested a small wire one.
Roberta
Between a small wire crate and this one, I'd lean more toward this one. A wire crate would be harder to get in and out of the car. The more I look at this one, the better it looks to me. I bet you'll get several responses tomorrow from people that know more about crates than I do.
This one looks like it has plenty of air holes for circulation. But is it airline approved? (Just out of curiosity.)
Karen
Its not Karen, but we have the other that is if we ever had to fly with them and it would fit both. Now its just size I'll measure up the one we have. The problem is Dachies are normal small dog high but half a dog more in length.

ps this is Amy can I have red one pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee greens a outdoories colour and Im not that sort of girl
That looks like a great option if she is needing air. I think she should get red! No girlie girl wants green!

ps Amy here Iz got red one..............
That sounds like a nice sturdy one! My first thought was how safe would it be in a crash...I don't know how it would compare to a hard sided one? When I was researching the safest crate to travel in, it actually said the seat belt was the safest marginally but that wasn't an option with Hallie since she was afraid in the car unless in a crate. (but I'm just sharing what I found at the time, take with a grain of salt!). I didn't read anything on the soft sided though and don't know...maybe it would fare even better than the hard sided one since it has some give to it. I would think maybe you'd want to be sure there wasn't anything hard or "pokey" in front of the crate so if a wreck they don't reach the pokey thing through the soft side? On the other hand a hard crate would have them hitting the sides in there, I did read to have the hard crate pretty small to them so they wouldn't have as far to go to hit a side (gads this is ghastly to talk about but an important topic!). I have been considering lining Hallie's with a baby bumper or something. I have her crate strapped down to the seat really tight so the crate wouldn't be flying around in a wreck as well. A wire crate would not be good as I've heard of them coming apart in a wreck and then you have all these metal stakes you could spear yourself and/or the dog on.
I agree about crating them or seatbelting them in the car, dogs have a much better chance of survival and less injury when constrained just like a human. Although some people who use a car seat will tie them in by their collar around their neck...that would spell disaster in a wreck to hit the end of the leash on their neck like that. They need a harness that goes through the seat belt...
I'm sure the soft sided will do great though I have several friends who use them. And Wee Amy red will go SPLENDIDLY with your beautiful black and tan coat!
Her big airline one would fit the pair of them in it and I think on impact it would pop, and also thought that she, if we just pulled up quick, would be flung onto the hard surface.
They actually think when she pulled her front leg muscles earlier in the year when she got stuck in te safety harness was probably what may have done the disc.
The main reason they said to crate her is mainly for braking and her falling into the foot well. We have a sling anyway between the back and front seat, Olver has a seat belt but not happy in it and the big crate resticted using it.
Last weekend when we went down to Bairnsdale I was aware at one stage she was a bit hot as the big plastic crate has air holes above her head. The metal ones looked to bitsie.

Oh that's right I forgot about her leg being caught! Gads. There is a danger in every dang thing isn't there. I never thought of that either that the airline one could pop. I use a varikennel and it is in the passenger seat. I needed one with a door at both ends so I could both get her out the passenger side door as well as be abel to see her and also open the door from the drivers seat. So I bought two crates, had my construction guy cut the back end off one and the door end off the other than he bolted the door end to the back end of the one so there is now a door on each end. (that way we can share bits of gardenburger while driving lol).
Roberta,
I have the exact soft crate you linked (in burgundy) and I love it. I strap it to the center backseat just like a car seat for kids and it works really well. They are also easy to pack and carry (mine came with a travel back). It came in real handy for me with Franky's IVDD back problems, when even touching him would make him scream, and also worked post-op. I just carried the whole thing wherever I went..in the car into the vets, etc.
