I am hoping someone might have an answer for me. Last night Daisy Mae (my 2yr old long haired) kept me up half the night licking her butt.... Should I be concerned about this :dontknow:..... She's done this before, but not to the extent of last night. She was at it for approx an hour and then would go to sleep and get up a while later and start all over again. She isn't acting any different than normal (and she is up to date on her heartworm meds and she was just at the groomers and had her butt 'sqeezed').... I'm just wondering if this is a normal thing....
Thanks!!!
Hi Stacey,
This happened with Buelah once. I took her to the vet after three or four days of it and he found she had a little ingrown hair that had become irritated.
You should be able to see it if that is what it is. It will look like an inflamed mosquito bite.
Good Luck!
Dachshunds have problems with their anal glands. They need to be expressed periodically and your baby may have full glands. A quick visit to the vet or even Petsmart to get them expressed would help. If she continues to lick, you might have her checked by the vet - licking is their way of healing -so there may be something else going on back there. Let us know !
I was going to say the same thing about needing her anal gland expressed. We usually call the vet and someone there can usually do it that day. It doesn't take long.
Hey Stacey!
I left work early and wanted to check with you and see how Daisy made out at the vet. Let me know!
Thanks!
Both my girls are very anal gland plug up prone. We take them into the groomer about every 2 or 3 weeks to get their butts squeezed. The groomer always gets a stinkful from both of my girls. Oh, at the same time, they get a pedicure too.
Berman has his rear squeezed about once a month - when he gets his bath and his nails trimmed.
You wanna know what's grosser than Daisy Mae licking her bottom? Berman gives his a good licking, then he wants to kiss us!
I learned to express Cajsa's anal glands because she seems to be prone to getting plugged up. I generally have to check them every other week or so to make sure they aren't getting too full and bothering her. If I go longer than that without at least checking them, I know there will be solid gunk in them and she gets irritated.
Also sometimes if they are licking and it's not the anal glands it could be the licking that is irritating the area causing them to lick more. If you've checked out the area and there doesnt' seem to be any swelling, unusual coloration/lumps/bumps then it may be that you could get a collar to keep her from licking it for a day or so to see if that helps. If not, then I'd call the vet to see what they suggest.
Ok, all this talk about anal glands has wished me bad luck! Grace woke up this morning and was rubbing her butt along the carpet and licking her butt all morning. We are going to the vet @ 4:15pm to have them expressed! I'll have Geroge's done too so to avoid another trip anytime soon!
My guys always used to lick their butts AFTER they were expressed. I always had to make sure I did not express them before they went to bed, or else they would keep me up half the night.
