Title: Another ice storm?
Post by: MimisMomma on December 10, 2007, 12:27:36 PM
Enough already is what I say. Calling for major ice here in the planes and people here at work are trying to figure out if it is going to be worth it to come to work tomorrow. We are supposed to get about an inch of ice where I live and then 1 to 5 inches of snow on top of that and then more freezing rain over night. Wonder if that is enough time to make skis for the pups!! (Just kidding, that would be dangerous!) Wish it was on the weekend!!! I get to load up more wood in case we loose power. I hope everyone on the board that lives in the storm zone stays safe and warm!!!

Hey, Mel! We're in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma (just east of Tulsa) and are covered in ice!  We had power at our house when we left this morning, but I'm not sure now. I tried to call my neighbor, but got no answer (she works from home). I hope our furkids are staying warm!  It's been raining all day - the roads aren't bad - just wet - not icy. I bet they will freeze up real nice tonight!  Ooh - maybe my gym will be closed - WOO HOO!

Gee from the maps it looks like the whole state of OK is covered in ice!! Do you have a fire place? I am thankful for mine especially if we stand a chance of loosing power. I hope you can get home safe!!! And you don't get home to find the furkids freezing their cute doxie butts off!! I am worried mine are going to be mad at me when I get home and try to get them to go out before it starts here!! They ignore me for some time after I do that!!!

Eastern Iowa here.  We are supposed to get it tonight.  About 1/4 inch of ice.  I'm lucky that I have a great boss.  He would rather have us stay at home and not risk our lives "just to get to work."

So, I'm going to run out and get the pre-storm staples for us Iowans:  TP, milk, and beer!

Its slicker than slick here too.  The roads are so bad out where we live we have been driving 15 mph top speed!   Even then our car still slides all over.  We are supposed to get a little more snow here, but thankfully it looks like the major part of this storm isn't going to come near us here.  I hope everyone that IS in it stays warm and safe.
Title: Ice Storm - checking in!
Post by: Jenny G on December 11, 2007, 08:28:55 AM
Well we got home yesterday from work - no electricity!  Luckily we had a gas fireplace, a freezer full of meat (my dad is a cattle rancher), a gas grill and 2 bottles of wine!  The furkids were good and got bored pretty early in the evening. We stayed up and played board games till bed time.

It's still raining today. There are trees down everywhere. The roads aren't bad at all - just wet. The main problem now is the trees that are snapping and breaking power lines. Hardly anyone in the area has power. Oh - except my office. yea.  Outside you just hear rain, tree limbs falling and transformers blowing. It's like a war zone! There was 1 gas station by my house that was open last night and they were out of gas!

There's going to be A LOT of clean up when this is all over.  I have a tall tree in my front yard that broke in 1/2 and is laying across my drive way.  I hope I don't lose the whole tree! I tried to take pictures, but they didn't turn out very well.  Maybe I can get some better ones tomorrow.

Oh well - any others that are in this mess - stay safe and WARM!

I went in - I'm a manager - it's kind of expected. Plus, the office is nice and warm!  The roads aren't bad at all - it's just falling tree limbs that are causing the real issue!

Mel,
I'm afraid you look like you're in for it!!   We got 3 inches here since 5 am!!  And its still snowing!!     Considering our weather man said we wouldn't get any, it was quite a shock tis morning.   Thankfully my boss let me go home early.   She lives in town and had spun out three times trying to get to work.  They are calling off schools and all sorts of stuff.

Be really careful if you are out and about today!  It looked like on the radar maps that you guys are getting the ice real bad already.

I made it to work today!! I was stuck yesterday at home!! We got about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of ice! It took me 45 minutes this morning to get my car cleaned off enough to drive. And my town doesn't do very well with cleaning the roads so it took me another 1/2 hour to get out of town which usually takes only 3 minutes! So that was a fun morning!! No power outages with this storm in my town but the town south of me was hit hard and they lost power. We didn't get the snow that they thought we would get. I think it went all towards doxielady!! Sorry about that.

I hope everyone is still safe and sound. And WARM!!

Worst seems to be over for Iowa.  Roads are somewhat icy, but passable.  Unfortunately we have a lot of trees that have been nearly destroyed, toppled over by the ice.  We never lost electricity, but some people are without power this morning.

We also learned that its' a bad idea forcing poor Ozzy to be in his kennel longer than 5 hours - I feel so guilty that we had to leave him that long yesterday.

Hope we don't have any more storms like this.

We ended up getting about 10-12 inches and have 1 1/2 foot high drifts!   The roads got cleared off really well last night, so no snow day today.   Our road we live on just got plowed an hour ago, so we can now safely get to work. My husband was able to make it to work this morning just fine.  He said it was really slick and scary, but he made it.  We are supposed to get more snow on Friday.  How much, I have no idea.

More snow doxielady? I talked to my aunt in Sydney and she said it has been snowing almost everyday there!! That's a lot of snow!! How is Porkey liking it? Is it hard for you to get him to go outside? I had to make a potty pad for Mimi, I don't want her to hurt her back again slipping on the snow and ice. But Tuttle and Carson go outside. Carson tried to run and found out real quick that it wasn't a good idea!! Of course it scared the crap out of me when I saw him go sliding!! He just looked at me like I was the crazy one for putting patches of ice on the grass!! After that he walked really slow!!  :2funny:

I am really kicking myself that I didn't get pictures of my car this morning (not that they would have come out since it was really dark still) with all the ice on it! I hope we don't get anymore of those storms.

Glad you can make it to work now though. I really don't like driving in the winter especially with ice and a ton of snow on top of that!!

I have found that the snow on top gives you a little extra traction on the ice.  Porky doesn't mind the snow, he just doesn't like it on his toes.  I gave up trying to scoop out a spot for him yesterday. The snow was coming faster than I could scoop.   We got more snow than anywhere else out here because we are right next to the hills.  Sidney and the rest of the area got 4-6 inches.  Not even two miles away our neighbor only got 4 inches!    :dontknow:  My boss thought I was crazy when i told her how much snow we got until she watched the news this morning.  :2funny:

I think its a good thing that I like snow.  Its the Swede in me, I think. LOL

Two years ago on the 15th of this month, we had a major ice storm here in Greenville, SC. There were people without power for 1 week. A lot of that is due to the fact that we experience this about once every two or three years (at least that bad of a storm) so the power company has a difficult time handling it. Add to that, the area having lots of old oak trees and being in the foothills of N.C. and you can imagine the mess. We were only out of power for a day and a half, but we are in a priority area because of a main intersection on our power grid. Luckily the mall had it's own generators, so shopping was in full force or we would have gone stir crazy and most people around here are sure to have an alternate heat source. As we house hunt, we make sure to look for a fireplace in anyplace we consider. I also try to find out how long the neighborhood we are looking in was without power during that storm! Our city and county council are finally discussing burying power lines, but it will take years. Still, it will be worth it in the end.
Hope everyone stays safe. We had another day in the upper 70's, but it starts raining tomorrow and this weekend drops into the 40's. Maybe I'll fnally get some shopping done then.
