Patches is a Long Hair 14# Doxie, she sleeps in a water bed with me,waterbeds have heaters so the bed is warm,I have a T-Shirt type sheet on the bed,a Down comfortor, a lite quilt on top, & a throw on top of that. I sleep with the ceiling fan on + a regular fan on I got use to sleeping with a fan on when I worked 11-7 shift (25 years)used the fans as white noise now can't sleep with out a fan on.Patches sleeps under all the covers??? I do not see how she can breathe under there but she does. I stay up on the computer all the dogs put to bed at 10:00pm. When I get ready to get in bed I move Patches get in then Patches waits for me to hold up the covers and she goes right under all the covers goes to sleep??? She only tried growling at me one time told her butt would be in the crate if she did it again no more growling at Mom getting into bed. Buddy sleeps in the bedroom too but in a crate by the bed, on the Dobe Forum most have their Dobes in bed with them sorry never happen with Buddy too big.

I slept with a ceiling fan on for nearly 30 years, and have just gotten used to sleeping without it. Guinness - all 6.6 pounds of him - sleeps underneath one of the "doxie donut" beds on my bed, or under my covers.
So it's not odd to me!

In the summer we sleep with a fan on. No matter how many covers I have on the bed; fan on or off; my two bury themselves under all the covers and go to sleep. I do not know how they breathe under all those covers :dontknow: but they do. Whenever hubby gets up during the night, Zoe immediately burrows inbetween hubby's two pillows. He will come back into bed and "share" the pillows with her. It is cute!
Sam angel used to sleep under the covers, but Mr Eddie sleeps on top but very close to me. Once, years ago b4 the dogs my cats used to sleep with me. One night Mimi angel burrowed deep down under the covers, including an electric blanket and scared me silly. In the middle of the night I nudged her with me foot and she didn't move, again a more severe nudge and nothing. So I threw back the covers - you never heard such language coming from such a cute little girl kitty, lol.
Eddie here dis morning momma woke up and guess what Cleo kitty had made me move away from MY MOM and made me sleep at the foot of the bed so she could be next to momma. Doesn't she know that its my place next to mom, NOT hers. Wait until tonight, just wait!!!!!!
We sleep with the fan on too and both kids bury deep !!! Brandy likes for the tip of her nose to be out, but Rudy is completly under. When we first got Rudy, I would fluff the covers several times during the night because I couldn't believe he could breathe under there !!!
Mon Dieu! You have never heard of ze Dachsundian Dive Reflex! Sacre bleu!
Zis iz zimilar to ze mammalian dive reflex. Ze dachshund can survive indefinitely under ze duvet in response to ze amount of oxygen beneath ze Earth's surface.
Zo clever, les petite chien!

Dachshunds are bred to be in areas where there isn't a whole lot of oxygen. Their circulatory and respiratory systems are over-engineered for their size. Even though Patches is only 14 pounds, I'd bet that her vitals would be the equivalent of a 150 pound human...and one in good shape to boot. Or, to put it in perspective, if Patches was human sized, her heart resting heart rate would be under 10 beats per minute. Compare that to Lance Armstrong, who has a resting heart rate of 28 beats per minute (most average hoomans are in the 60 - 80 bpm range), and you can see why she is able to burrow without any problems. All my dachshunds are burrowers.
Max-angel used to be the "Maxmometer". He would burrow until he got too warm. Then he would go "topside" above the covers until he cooled off, at which point he would burrow again. Max could do this up to a half-dozen times during the night.
We have never let them sleep with us as we have a high bed and people with short legs don't go good with heights, plus we think they should have somewhere of their own. They can come up if we are sitting in bed watching TV or a sleep in. All the girls dive the boys never, Oliver allows and only keeps a blankie when it is really cold. The girls all loved being under the cloth Emma was the worst as if her blankies were being washed she went under the mattress.

Porky usually only gets to be in the BIG bed with us in the wintertime or if he is not feeling well. He burrows under blankets all the time. It could be 95 degrees inside the house and he would still dive under all his blankies. Believe me, he has a lot! He has a huge pile laying on the floor in the living room. We call it "Porky's Mound." If we're ever looking for him, (rarely happens) we check the mound first and usually find him fast asleep buried under 5 pounds of blankets.
Oops my water bed has 2 sets of drawers under it no room in my bedroom for a dresser since I have my computer in my bedroom the 2 sets of drawers make the water bed about 28" high. Patches never tries to jump out of the bed she waits for me to put her in and out of it.One time left the computer chair turned the wrong way I had went to the store and when I got home no Patches at the door this was before she turned into a Trash dog ( Now is crated when I leave).Anyway she never barked or anything I went though the house calling her name she had jumped into the computer chair went back to bed. She was standing there wagging her tail when I found her.I now make sure the computer chair is not where she can jump on it, I'm too old to get a scare like that thought she must have sneaked out the door when I left for the store.

While Madison usually ends up under the covers, she usually starts out of them. Dolly, on the otherhand, was the queen of burrow. It coult be 100 degrees out and she would be under several layers of blankies.
Hallie isn't a big burrower either. She of course sleeps in the "big bed" (I dont think I could sleep without her snuggled up next to me she's the best cuddler!!) on colder nights she crawls under the covers with me, with her butt toward me because she knows she gets too hot if she snuggles too close but she wants to be touching me with something...so it's her butt! I got one of those electric blankets that heat each side independently so I can heat my side and not hers. She will crawl out from the covers if it's warm but this time of year she stays under all night. When she wakes up in the morning, she moves in closer until we're nose to nose with her little paws around my neck (as far as they reach) and a little smile on her face and she snoozes a while longer while I just stare at her.
But when she's in one of her several beds in the house during the day while I'm working, I've rarely seen her burrow unless it's cold in here which rarely happens (I do tuck her in a lot though). She DOES love to be covered up in warm towels fresh from the dryer, she now will sit at the back door while the dryer is going and "boof" at me to get the towels even if they aren't done yet. She gets 3, one beneath her, one wrapped around her neck and the third over the top of everything. I leave just her little nosie sticking out and I always lean over to listen to her groaning and grunting softly with pleasure.
Dr. Leaky, your Mother has me flat on the floor. LOL!!!
Oh yeah, I have burrowers!!!

Yep!! Burrower here! Penny HAS to be under a blanket no matter where she is...her crate, her bed, the couch, her house outside... She usually sticks the tip of her nose outside the blanket.
With our two, one is hot blooded, one is cold blooded. Champ will lay on top of the covers usually on top of Smokey stretched out sideways so that he can touch both my husband and me at the same time. Smokey will be under the covers curled into a small ball, the tighter the better, more covers are better (we think that the lack of oxygen has caused brain damage because he can be the most clueless dog on the planet sometimes.)
Now I have a good reply to anyone about Patches misbehavior every once in awhile she does have her moments now I can say brain damage from lack of oxygen when she sleeps at night yeah good reply.
When he gets to sleep in the big bed, Ozzy will burrow under the covers and plants his back right against me. Or, if I'm on my side, he will burrow under and curl up right behind my knees.
Hubby has been home sick the last two days. Yesterday, he went upstairs to lay down and he invited Ozzy to come with him. He thought it was funny how Ozzy burrowed under the covers and cuddled up to him.
Of course, Ozzy thinks he's in heaven because he has not had to be in the crate for very long periods of time. Hard reality will hit tomorrow when hubby returns to work :verdict:
