Title: Scary - please learn from my mistake!
Post by: Delia and girls on November 20, 2007, 11:39:59 AM
I have to 'fess up and tell you what a bad mom I was...OK, Ron has to take the blame for some of this. We had gone to the grocery store just to get a few items and took the girls with us. Ron stayed in the car with them while I went in the store (still too hot in TX to leave them, not mention not safe). I had the few items on my lap on the way home. We pull into the garage, Ron gets Gretchie out and I figure I'd get the items in the house and come back for Ilsa. As I'm putting the items on the kitchen counter, Ron lets Gretchie in - nekkid (harness off) - and goes back out. She runs to the counter where their food is and I realize it's feeding time. Ron ran back out - must have gone after Ilsa. I'm thinking I'll fix their food. He comes back in, I'm about to put the bowls down and there's no Ilsa - only Gretchie - VERY unusual! I walk over to Ron to ask him where Ilsa is. He's like..."I dunno. I got Gretchie in and went back out for the mail." Me..."You mean you didn't go back out for Ilsa when you brought Gretch in?" Ron jumps up and runs to the garage. There is Ilsa - poor little girl - just sitting in her car seat. Luckily, it wasn't 100 degrees and we had left the garage door up, so she wasn't in the dark, but still scary! I will NEVER do something else first and come back for her.

Oh man,  A very small boo boo in the world of dog parenting but knowing you 2 I can imagine how mortified you were! Gretchen was probably thinking YEAY all the more for me! My little plan worked! And you do have to smile at that cute little Ilsa puppy face sitting all alone in the car like Grandpa Simpson, going "h'loooo?" If that had happened to me I'd have been worried about the cold and not the heat! It could have been worse it could have happened Sunday on her birthday!

I'm glad she is OK!   :meme:  And the thing about something like this happening...........it makes a person so much more aware, and you will never, ever do this again, so it was a good lesson learned without having it turn tragic.

Oh wow! That is scary!  Try not to beat yourselves up about it though.  It turned out well thank God!  Like Patty said,I'm sure you'll be much more aware now and pay more attention.

LOL, DD, you're right...at least it didn't happen on her birthday. Ron said she was just sitting there - pretty much like you described Grandpa Simpson. Of course, Ron's mind works like yours...he 'what iffed' himself to death! She was squirming in his arms as he was trying to get her harness off - she saw Gretchie was eating and her bowl was ready for her to eat.

Patty and doxielady...you guys are right also - lesson learned and she's not harmed at all. In fact, she's been for car rides since and is just as happy to be getting in her car seat. I wonder what was going through her little head as she watched Ron going back and forth to get the mail and then leave her there by herself. My poor little curly haired girl!

Been there - done that....not in the car seat - but in the garage and I know how hot it gets !!!    I am sure she is just fine - and I can picture her just sitting there waiting - she KNEW you would both realize very quickly she wasn't there!   As in tune to your babies as you both are - I am sure sweet baby girl didn't wait very long.......  But it sure makes your heart pound - doesn't it?  And as Patty says - it makes us that much more aware of where those puppers are at all times.

Sounds like an extra treat day !!!!

Listen, one time Sam and I took all six kids to the synagogue for an evening program.  I pulled up in front, told him to get all the kids inside and settled in day care, and I'd park.  I park across the street down the block, walk back to the synagogue and whisper to my husband, "How is the baby in the day care?  Did he cry?"  My husband looks at me and says, "I didn't put the baby in day care.  Didn't you get him out of the car?"

Sam set a new land speed record for getting back to the car and retrieving the sleeping infant!!

The important thing is that she is fine and a lesson was learned.  Thanks for sharing the experience with us... we ALL do the wrong thing accidentally from time to time but sometimes just knowing what others have been through makes us think just a little more.  Don't beat yourself up over this.... your a good mama!
