Title: Oatmeal Bath for Humans and Dogs.
Post by: doxielady5569128 on October 20, 2007, 10:22:30 PM
BEFORE using this on your dog, consult your vet!   Porky does just fine with it and I don't see it being harmful to any dog, but just in case, check first!

Okay...here's the recipe for the bath.   It works for humans too!

1.  get out your blender or food processor.

2.  get out 1/2 cup of instant, unflavored oatmeal.  (more for adult humans,  1/3 cup is for babies.) Quick or slow cooking oats work equally as well.

3.  Put oats into your blender or processor.  Blend it until the oats become very fine.  It should look like a powder.

4. Next, test it by stirring 1 tablespoon of the oats you just blended into a glass of water.  If the oats absorb the water and make it look milky and feel silky, you are ready to add it to the bath.  If not, blend the oats a few seconds longer and test again.

5. Sprinkle the oats into a tub of running water.  Stir the water with your hand occasionally to make sure there are no clumps on the bottom of the tub, breaking up any you do find.

6. Add the pupper, human, or child to the tub.   Take caution!   The tub will be SLIPPERY!

7.  Keep the pupper in the tub for 15-20 minutes.  Just letting them soak.  I take a small cup and pour it over Porky's back.

8.  Remove pupper or human and pat their skin/fur dry with a towel. DO NOT RUB!!

Hope this helps!  For humans, this can be repeated once or twice a day as needed.  I usually only have to do it once every other month for Porky.  I'm not a vet but I don't think it would be good for their skin more often then that.   Also, DON'T let your dog drink the water!!!

For humans this works great for the chicken pox, poison ivy, etc....

Good, I'm glad it worked for you!   :apls: Its the only thing other than his food that keeps him from itching all the time!  I don't see it harming a dog, but I would rather make sure people check first just in case.

I just witnessed a miracle.  My 16 yr old dog has been in seasonal allergy agony for days.  I have been using wheat germ oil on his food, topical sprays on his hot spots, benadryl, some aspirin, commercial Oatmeal shampoos.  Nothing has really helped - some temorary relief.  Every part of his body is itching and he is going bald from scratching and biting.  He is wimpering, growling, crying.  It is breaking my heart.  It has been a nightmare with no one in the house, especially him,   getting any sleep for days.  Everyone is fighting about what to do.  We cannot afford a vet visit.  I just gave him your bath.  At first, He wanted out, as usual.  Then he started wagging his tail and relaxing.  After the soak, he got out of the tub, I wrapped him in a towel and he actually dropped to the floor and fell soundly asleep.  He's still there, wet, still sleeping.   I don't have the heart to wake him up. This dog has not been able to relax in 5 or 6 days.  The instant relief was astounding.  I am so grateful to you.  I cannot believe how well this worked.  You are, literally, a life saver.  I was worrying that at his advanced age the constant itchy  torture might kill him.  And my husband and I were definitely about to kill eachother.  Thank you so much.  This treatment is a miracle.

I'm so happy your baby is feeling better!!!   It is so hard to see them so itchy like that.  Both my dog and I have severe year-round allergies and this bath is the only thing that is an instant relief.   It is gentle enough to do once a week if you want to do that.   Also something else that helps is to rinse their paws as soon as they come in from outside.  Another good trick is to leave everyone's shoes at the door so you aren't tracking in stuff that could trigger his allergies.    I would personally switch to liquid fish oil rather than wheat germ oil.  Some dogs can't handle the wheat germ.     Fish oil has worked miracles for our Porky Pie.

If you need any more advice or help on this send me a message.  I'd love to help other puppers who struggle with these nasty allergies!

You are all so kind.  I will try the salmon oil.  He seems to be getting a little better.  The temp here in Philadelphia has dropped and that seems to be helping.  I will do another oatmeal bath on Thursday, my day off.  Thanks again, Lee

Porky drinks it sometimes, and it hasn't hurt him.   I wouldn't let them drink a lot of it, but its gotta be better than soap right?!

I have to make sure Fin's soap is all natural cuz he loves drinking bath water, and i always have to make sure the shower is really well rinsed out because everyday he hops in and licks the whole thing.

And he has TWO huge bowls of clean water, but no.. soapy warm water is better...

Oats are very nice in our skins so it is also better for our dogs. But it could be better to consult vets first before doing it. I am sure things will be under control if consulted first from the expert.
