Title: We are headed to Boston!!
Post by: Kari on October 14, 2007, 11:22:56 AM
Drew and I are headed to Boston next Saturday. He has a business trip there that we extended for some vacation time. I am so excited as I have never been there before and we will actually get to see Fall there (since we don't really get seasons in San Diego). We decided to head up to New Hampshire for the first couple of days and then to Dedham, MA for his work and after that we will be in Boston for 4 days. We have a list of things today but does anyone have suggestions to add to our list? Good places to eat? Anyone live in the area to meet up with??

If you don't come up with a good list from the board here, I can get one from a coworker. She has been there a few times. They usually go up there for July 4th. Also, our music minister at church was just there in May. He loves that city!!!
You should see fall there, for sure. It should really be beautiful. Randy and I keep saying we are going to go there, but haven't made it yet. Maybe one day...

Oh wow, a TRIP!!!  I love seeing new places.  Enjoy the fall colors when you go.  We had a big wind yesterday that blew the last of the gold leaves off the birches, and this morning we woke up to snow.  It probably won't stay, the temp is right around +32, but if this freezes it will be treacherous commuting tomorrow.  Oh well.  I took my folks to the airport this morning, they are heading home to Yuma, Arizona, and the sun and temps in the 80's or so.  Lucky dogs!
Who's going to watch Penny when you are away?

I'm pretty excited about this trip - I have always wanted to go!! My mom is going to watch Penny for us and I'm sure she will be super spoiled! Tucker is going to be boarded at our vet. I hate doing it to him but he gets so stressed when we leave that I can't leave him by himself and he really doesn't like other people so having a house sitter is out  :verdict:

Awesome!
What part of New Hampshire will you be going to??  DH & I spent a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the fall of '95 and again in '05.  Its really beautiful and the fall foliage is always breathtaking.... be sure to bring a camera, although pictures never do it justice.  Watch out for the moose... they can make driving dangerous, so be careful!  Be sure to try some real New England maple syrup and/or maple sugar candy!
Boston is great, too.  I love the cobblestone streets.  Watch out for the dog poop, as of our last visit there is not "clean-up" ordinance and some lazy dog owners leave presents on the sidewalks. When we were there we went to: the USS Constitution, The Old North Church, Cheers, walked the Freedom trail, shopped at Quincy Market and The Yankee Candle Company, Plymouth Plantation, and a stop at Salem, MA (pretty neat close to Halloween).
The fall colors should still be good as they are peaking here in PA.  Good idea to bring layers for New England at this time of year.... the weather changes day to day (last week it was in the 80s and the past few days it was in the 50s and 60s during the day, I expect frost soon.....good bye garden). It can get warm in the day (although probably not by your standards   ) and pretty chilly at night.

Hope you guys have a blast!   :thumb:

Sturbridge Village, Plymouth and all the cheap LOBSTER you can eat!  Boston Museum of Art is awesome.  Walk the commercial docks, fascinating.

Number one is the lobster of course.  But the freedom trail walk is neat and the aquarium and the USS Constitution.  If you have a chance Salem is really neat too...they have the witch museum and have the dungeons there ...great at Halloween time. And the house of Seven Gables house was neat too.

Hi Kari,
I lived in New Hampshire (Portsmouth) for most of my adult life.  We moved to Florida when the youngest went off to college.
The foliage should be gorgous right now.  If you are in Boston be sure to hit up the North End for some of the best Italian Food ever.  There are a ton of great little places right on and off Hanover Street.
Faneuil Hall is great if you want to try some really good local cuisine....   http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com.   For some evening fun I would suggest Dick's Last Resort. It's right there in Faneuil Hall and lots of fun.  If your beer drinkers you might want to try one of the Sam Adams seasonal brews.  Not sure what's out right now but I haven't had one that I didn't like.  Have fun!

What fun!  Way back in '72, my family did a camping trip though Quebec and Ontario, and came back down the Atlantic seacoast.  We saw the capitol dome in Augusta, Maine (my mom wanted a red granite boulder!), and we camped at Wells Beach - beautiful!  We went through New Hampshire, into Massachusetts and drove around the traffic circles in Boston.  My sister and I waded in Boston  Harbor - turned our legs blue to the knees!.  I remember having clam chowder in Pawtucket, Rhode Island - yummy!   We saw Lady Liberty from a distance, went through the George Washington Tunnel, and saw the Empire State Building - from a distance.  We got lost after seeing a farm sale in Lancaster, and therefore, we missed the Liberty Bell and some other points of historic interest, including the home of my great-great-great-great-great grandfather, John Hart - one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence for New Jersey.  I hope you have a wonderful time, and enjoy Vermont - it's the only state I've missed east of the Mississippi!

Kari, Just print out the last few posts on here and planning your trip should be easy! I would love to see a few colorful leaves. I've seen a few that have turned, but with it being so dry this year, no one can predict what the color will be like or when it will happen.

Back in 1994, I went on vacation to Cape Cod with my dad.  It was a great trip.  Not sure how much time you're actually going to have and how far from Boston you'll want to travel, but one place we visited that I would recommend would be Nantucket Island.  Such a quaint little area and so neat!  You have to take a ferry there, and if I remember correctly, it was kind of a lengthy trip.  We were there in the summer, but I bet it is beautiful in the fall!

We also visited Newport, Rhode Island.  My dad was in the Navy and was stationed there in the '60s.  I remember driving by all the awesome mansions and seeing the church where Jackie and JFK were married.  One of the mansions we saw was that of Rose Kennedy.

Newport is about an hour and a half from Boston.  Cape Cod is also about an hour and a half from Boston.

Several years ago my hubby and I traveled to Boston and walked the Freedom Trail (saw the Old North Church and Paul Revere's Ride) and toured the USS Constitution....Boston is a wonderful city...the harbor is gorgeous.  We also sent to Salem and walked around Salem and saw the House of the Seven Gables, etc.  Then we went up into the White Mountains and on to Concord New Hampshire (hit several outlet malls and there was no State sales tax!!!!)....OH HAPPY DAY :hello2:  We traveled the entire Kankamongous (sp?) highway and saw the Old Man In The Mountain (it was great!!!).....if you get there make sure you take the cog railway up into the mountains....it was fantastic!!  I remember driving through Bethlehem on the way home....great little town!!  Have a wonderful time...I am soooo jealous!!!
