Title: Anyone know where I can get a good pattern for a witch costume?
Post by: Beth on September 24, 2007, 07:22:15 AM
DH got me a sewing machine for our anniversary (which I have wanted for sooooo long!) and I want to make Lara's Halloween costume.  She wants to be a witch.  Not just a witch....a bad witch....LOL!  This is what she said.  Anyway, I have an idea of how I want to make her dress, but I just don't know where to find a good pattern.  DH seems to think I can do it without a pattern, but since I am a beginner sewer, I would feel more comfortable with something to guide me.  I think I'll go and take a look at Joann Fabrics today to see what kind of patterns they have.  I looked at Walmart too.

The idea I have in mind is a simple looking dress that comes down just below the knee, with the bottom being that jagged, witchy look.  I want the sleeves to be 3/4 length, and then have them flare out down to the wrist.  I was even thinking that if I could find a pattern for a regular dress with this kind of style, then I could change it to be a witch's dress.  If anybody knows of anything, it would be a great help.  Thanks!

Simplicity 3595 is pretty darn adorable!

McCalls M5494 is cute, but a little on the pricey side.  M5209 is okay, but how big is Lara.  This smallest size here is a 7.  M4948 comes in children's and girls sizes.  M2854 has a lovely cape.  M2856 is cute, but her legs might get cold--best for warmer climates!

Butterick B4631 is cute, but it's a no sew, and I know you want to use your new machine!
B4314 would make a good Snow White witch syle costume, but the smallest is a size 7.

Have fun making Lara's costume.  Shop NOW while the fabric selection is still good.  The specialty fabrics sell out quickly!

I used to make costumes for my nephews, but later I took a second job and it was just too hard to get them done in time. Also, making cow and elephant costumes was fun, and I didn't even mind the vampire costume.  Later on they wanted super heros, and the Spiderman costume was enough to make me swear off costume making!  All that work on that stupid hood and the rotten little punk wouldn't wear it!

Jeri, thanks so much for your help!  Those are all great.  When I finally decide (which better be soon....I have a feeling I'll need all the time I can get) I'll be sure to post a picture of Lara in her witch costume! :thumb:

Simplicity 3603 has the jagged edge and is a toddler size. I had no idea you could see the patterns online. That should tell you just how much sewing I do!
