Title: Blood in urine.
Post by: OCCD on September 11, 2005, 02:32:11 PM
My 11 yr. old male (not neutered) has been passing fresh blood in his urine. I know a vet visit is in order, but any ideas ahead of time?

Sometimes blood in the urine can be caused by crystalized urine.   The crystals irritate the urethra when they pass causing it to bleed.   Adding white vinegar to your puppers water can break up the crystals before they are passed.

My Rudy-angel used to pass blood once he had expelled all his "regular" urine and was attempting to mark additional territory.   I did the white vinegar for him.  It cleared it up and I never had a recurrance.

Get your dog to the vet asap.   :ambulance: The very least serious thing it could be is a bladder infection.  This is very painful for your dog, but easy to cure with antibiotics.  Other possibilities include kidney or bladder stones, cancer.  Blood in the urine is not a wait and see condition--it warrants an immediate vet visit.

Welcome to our message board.  You will find this is a very friendly and caring place.  Please let us know how the vet visit goes!

I agree with Jeri. donuT had a bladder/ut infection once that I caught early becos he was peeing in the big bed. Took him to the vet straight away who said that any longer he woudl have had blood in his urine. Take your pupper to the vet immediately with a urine sample if you can get it. They will do a dipstick test on his urine straight away and most likely put him on antibiotics.
Pls let us know how you go.

Welcome to the group!  :headbang:  Please take your dog to the vet!  :ambulance:  Blood in urine could be a host of different things, especially in a senior dog.  It is probably a bladder infection, but it could be a sign of kidney failure, injury, kidney/bladder stones, cysts, the doggy needs to be seen by a vet.  Small dogs especially can go down hill fast and infection can get really bad.  I would take the fur-kid right away!   :sunny: and  coming your way!  Don't forget to put your pin in on the member map!  Let us know how you make out at the vet's!

I should add to my post that when Rudy did pass blood, we took him to the vet and they did the full range of tests on him, including a catheter, which he did NOT like.  Rudy's one peculiar characteristic was that he never bark directly at me except when he was very upset.   After the catheter, he was definitely upset and let me know it.

All the tests proved to be inconclusive.   I actually got the white vinegar suggestion from someone on this board.   Hopefully your problem will be minor.
