After working at a company for 29 plus years, I was told on 8/07/07 that my job had been eliminated. Needless to say I was devastated. I had figured on retiring there.
I have to admit it was not a complete surprise. The Home Office had told the GM that my department had too many people in it. But I figured that since I had the second most seniority, and had worked in whatever capacity they needed, that I would not be the first to go (I have learned since leaving that a second person (out of 4) was let go).
Now I have the fun task of trying to find a job at 53. So far no luck.
My pupper, Solomon, is the only one happy that I am home a lot more now. When I go out on job interviews, I am not gone as long as when I was working.
Thanks for letting me vent. It does make me feel better.

Wow - that really stinks! I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this situation. I know it doesn't help, but know that everything happens for a reason...even if you don't know what that reason is right now. Keep us updated on how the job hunt goes!
Darcel,
I am so sorry you lost a job after you served them so well for all those years. I pray there is something better waiting for you.

Thank you both for your support and prayers. I know that there is a reason, but mainly after three weeks it felt good to vent.

That really sucks - I hope you got a good severance package. Job hunting is never fun - but at our age (I am close to you !) - it is a scary and daunting task. There is something out there - may be in a completly different field. I have been with my company for 32 yrs and have just gone through some major management changes. When that happens - you just don't know - your sense of security is gone because you don't know how new management will feel about current workers. So holding my breath and just doing my job right now.
Keep us posted on the hunt !
you know, you should explore age discrimination, seriously. You may have been let go illegally.
Karen
I have talked with a lawyer, and since they let two other people go (one with more senoirity than me) he felt there was no discrimination. Plus Tennessee is a state where they don't have to have a reason to let you go. I forget what the lawyer called it, but I really have no suit.
Thanks for the thought.

I am so sorry you lost your job. Sometimes it is terrible what companies do to their longest and best employees
!!! Good Luck on your job hunt. Don't worry, something will come along, maybe not as soon as you would like, but something will definitely come along :thumb:
