Title: Some News not so good not so bad
Post by: Roberta on August 18, 2007, 03:22:53 PM
Amy went through surgery last night she had a compromised disc.
Remember this is Am Sunday here.
Friday night we came home and she was her normal self all wuuuuuuuuufffffffffffffff dinner PLleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase. Then next time we looked she was lying under the table not herself if I'm cooking. Thought she had a tad constipation asher tummy was a bit tender. Watched her like a hawk, read NO SLEEP, and took her ti the vet am Sat, our ususal Vet was not there so we saw another  and she said one of her vertibrae was sore but at this point she was walking OK. Mid afternoon I called the Vet again to see if thye could get Ray or Stuart to call me. They said NO, so I got onto the emergency VEt/hospital and went through it all. They said to come in Charle Kruntz (?spelling) was coming back from a  confernece, but his locum who they phone and said he could mylogram to-day and go from there, as they need it to see what was going. Well they gave her more pain meds and sent us home with tranquilizers if she got agitated as we thought she would settle better, she is a stay and sleep sort of girl.
Just got home spoke to the surgeon and had dinner, time line 830pm, was watching a film with her atmy side tummy full and snoring, when the phone ran Charles had arrived back. He seems to be updated with the goings on of the clinic via computer when he is out of town, and said if we wanted he would meet us there at 10pm, so we were there at 945pm. We stayed till  they finnished the CT and Mylogram and went home, we gave her a hug before they took her in and  by 1030 she was in surgery and we got word she was out in recovery by midnight.
I'm about to ring and see how she is this morning. She still had a lot of neutological control and could wee wee etc. He gave it a 90%, but we  will be glad in a few weeks time.
Oliver we took the first time, but on the return visit we asked David  our neighbor and close friend to come in and sit with him, he is OK just a bit more clingy.
The staff there seem great, we have been a few times wheb she got bitten by a spider and he cut his foot and when he pulled a muscle.
So we could do with a few prayers.

ps she has lost some weigh via hair removal.............

Oh no...my heart just sinks everytime this d*** thing hits another one of our babies. I imagine you and Nick are right exhausted, Amy has never had any sign before this has she? And she is only what, 6 or so at the most? Thank goodness she has savvy, loving parents who caught this quick and it was all done in time. Really hard thing to go through but her chances sound great. Please post as soon as you hear more and a big hug to her for me and Oliver too!  :comfort:

Whew! We can breathe a little sigh of relief anyway. Glad she is doing well but my heart is breaking for her missing her Mom! She'll be home before you know it though and you will all be happier.

How old is she? This thing is so scary because there usually isnt' any warning, they can look fine then boom...everything crashes down around you. Her prognosis sounds excellent though!! That is great!!

Dee she is about 6, and Colleeen said its between 6 and 7 it starts to be seen. Dr also said how active does not realy play into as Oliver bounces off everything and she is the one that is sedate.

I agree with that, I think each doxie is either prone to it or not and if so there isn't that much you can do. But you have to be really careful with them all since you dont' know if yours is prone or not. Here, they say the peak years are from 4 to 7 with more being toward the age of 4. My Jessie had her surgery just after turning 4, I see a lot about that age. They say after 7 the chances are better that they won't have a problem (but no guarantee of course) and that if they do it is often not as severe but again there are plenty that break that rule too. I have heard different breeders also say here that smooth have more problems with backs but the vets I've asked all say it's the same across the board from what they see. Bottom line is WAY too many doxies have this darn thing hit them!!

*trying to stay off my soapbox about breeders who dont research lines and know the problems before breeding and perpetuate this awful thing*

:)

With as well as Amy is doing now I'm sure she'll make a full recovery and come thru with flying colors, she will do great but Mom and Dad will be in hyper worry mode from now on??  :doah:
