Well, Day One - Monday - started off on a high note. I actually got out of my home 45 minutes ahead of schedule! Headin' down the highway, lookin' for adventure, hey I could write a song about this!
I made signs for the car that said "SERVICE DOGS" so people wouldn't freak out seeing all the kennels in the car. In fact, on Sunday, I had two of the kennels already in the back seat and stopped at a store, only to have an older woman challenge me,"Excuse me, Miss, do you have DOGS in that car?" "No, ma'am, it's 98 degrees out here, I don't bake hot dogs, I only grill 'em!" Here's your sign.
So at the first rest stop, the four boys got out for a make break and caused a near riot in West Virginia. A woman wanted to know if they were nursing home dogs. She had no sooner asked, when all four of the simultaneously started lunging for her throat! I said, "No, Ma'am, these are not cute, cuddly dogs that let you pull their tails or yank on their ears or walk up to me. These are service dogs for mental patients. You interact with them on their terms or they take your fingers off." She took her sign and moved along.
We finally got in to Claytor Lake Park southeast of Roanoake, Virginia. It was beautiful. Our site was right next to the showers and bathroom facility, which meant that ALL NIGHT long every time someone walked by, Guinness started yipping, which started Rosco arfing, which got Beau and Merlin baying. At three in the morning, this was not fun. Come morning, I dropped the tent, the universal sign for "I'm packing out today." Was that a cheer I heard? Well, never mind.
Day two I drove and drove and drove and DROVE! Who moved Chattanooga to Oklahoma?
I finally got to D'Niel's facility. The doggies took the opportunity to cause a riot amongst the staff, so we waited outside in the 98 degree heat. It didn't matter where I was, it was 98 degrees!
D'Niel hasn't cut his hair in four months, so I was a little taken aback, but all in all he looks great and we are having a wonderful time. More tomorrow!
NEXT: PACK ATTACK!! Banned from "Bones and Bows Boutique" after attempted mauling of groomer/owner's mother!! Film at eleven!
Karen
LOL!! Sounds like you are having quite the trip!! Good luck with the herd!!
I've been in Bones and Bows before. When Meg and I went in there last year, they weren't very friendly, and since we didn't have a dog with us, we figured it was because we DIDN'T have a dog. I really hope the boys decide to get a little more social. I also hope the temperature starts to drop very soon. Did you like the park there with the carousel? There is a great coffee place called Stone something on the same street as Bones and Bows. Has a great area out back to sit and look at the city (if it ever cools down enough to do so)!
P.S. Randy loves your update so far. Especially your "Here's your sign" conversations! I'm glad d'Niel is doing well and having fun.
You put a smile on my face and a laugh out loud in my voice, lady. Sounds like you've got those hotdogs under control. I'm so glad that D'niel is doing well. Keep up the updates. VERY uplifting...not to mention funny as, well, heeeeere's my sign.
Like Sandy, I had to laugh out loud at some of the stories...Service Dogs...that's a good one!
