Title: Help finding a puppy
Post by: jillc on August 02, 2007, 10:46:17 AM
Hello everyone,

I have just begun my search for a dachshund puppy and need a little help.  I live in New York City and am not sure where to look for a reputable breeder near my home.  I do not have a car (puplic transportation does just fine!) so it is hard for me to travel outside the area to look for pups.   My husband and I are looking for our first puppy together and would like to go through a good breeder and have no interest in puppy mills, pet stores etc.  But I am having trouble finding anything!

Can anyone help me with information about breeders in my area?

Thanks so much!

Jill

Hi There, Have you had any luck in locating a puppy? I am a volunteer with "DACHSHUND RESCUE OF NORTH AMERICA and I'm sure there might be something there you're looking for;simply go to www.drna.org and look at what's available.I have seen in the past where there have been available dogs in New York.

Here is the Dachshund Club of America  breeder referral contact, Vicky Spencer: lorindol@roadrunner.com

There are several breeders for Dachshunds listed for NY.
She should be able to help you.
Good luck on your search!!!

If you haven't found a puppy yet I hope that you will look at rescue. www.drna.org we do get puppies you just have to be patient and transportation can usually be arranged.

Most of you will probably shoot me down for this, but I found my dream pup on www.puppyfind.com . I feel I was lucky because I found a good breeder, not just a BYB. She's a Vet Tech with years of producing good, healthy, pet-quality pups. We are really pleased with our decision. Maybe, we also just got lucky. I did look at www.puppyfinder.com  which is a completely different site that I don't advise, but I'm sure I'll hear it's pretty much the same. I didn't buy my pup unseen or have her shipped, either.

You got really lucky finding a dog from that website.   As long as you really research it, I don't see too much harm in going to that website. But, like the others I would go for a rescue first myself.  I got my dog Porky from a breeder who I thought was good, and she truly was at the time, but now she has gotten money hungry and her dogs re suffering because of it.

If you do choose a breeder be VERY careful and if it feels wrong, trust your gut feeling.     Good luck in your puppy search.   I hope you find the perfect one just for you!

It felt right from the start and yes, I do know how lucky we got! The vet gave her a  :thumb: today, so we are VERY happy! He almost seemed impressed by her, which made me feel awesome-being my 1st Doxie I've ever had. Always have LOVED them, just never had one. Wondering why still!!! Thanks for the info and yes, I'd go with rescue had I not fell in love with my Cali girl. I have a GOOD gut feeling, so it wasn't all about getting caught by the puppy breath!!!

Oh no, not at all, just have been harassed for it in another forum  :violent1:. Some of us with a large family cannot afford a $1,000 pet Dachshund pup, so I searched one out and it worked, bottom line. Oh-and thanks-she is my baby doll-we ADORE her!!! The vet gave her  :thumb: and everyone @ the vet wanted to steal her!!!  :nono:
