A couple of years ago I posted on here that my dog Manny is terrified of thunderstorms.I've tried different ideas and some work and some don't.The other day my sister got a book in the mail for home remedies and there was a section in there about dogs and storms and a suggestion was to get a jade charm and put it on his collar.Well I'm willing to try it but have no idea where I could get a jade charm.I want something small so it won't bother Manny when it's not storming.
Oh by the way if anyone out there has any suggestions I'll be happy to read them!
Wow - never heard of a jade charm. Google it !
Never heard of a Jade charm but some Dog catalogs have Anxiety wraps for dogs that are scared of storms, also you can use Rescue Remedy, a CD of a storm play it softly then a little louder any reaction you are going to fast it might take weeks of listening to it.
Google Dog fear of storms you may find more information.

It's Dog Whisperer time again. Cesar Millan worked with a Jack Russell Terrier who went ballistic around motorcycles and by using his calm assertive mode, got the JRT to calm down around the bike. Can you try the same thing with storm sounds?
Of course, there's the whole atmospheric change, barometric pressure and all, so sound alone may not be the problem. But since dogs sense your mood, calm assertive yields calm submissive.

I've heard of Rescue remedy and have seen other types of calming solutions at the pet store that you could try. I'd also check with the vet for any more ideas. The ones already given are good ideas too.
I'm lucky in that Ozzy does not seem fazed by storms. In fact, he almost always waits until a storm is in full bloom, then sits by the door asking to go out!
We did have a tornado warning last night, and he seemed to know something was amiss, with almost every light on in the house, all TV's going at full volume, and the sirens wailing. It's not every day we huddle in the basement, either. He kept giving me the "What did I do wrong" L@@K, so I just reassured him that everything was going to be OK. Still, I know dogs can sense fear, and I was a little scared. Here, they can track funnel clouds down to the street level, and there was one funnel cloud reported less than 2 miles from us.
Everything is OK here, minor tree damage, limbs down, and the only thing destroyed was a barn, which was set on fire by lightning.
I can't even imagine something like a tornado, we don't get those here. I think they'd be pretty scary......unpredictable.

California is not known for tornados, either, but we've had warnings and sightings the last few years. When I lived in Missouri, I was in "tornado alley", of course. I remember many watches, seeing many tornados, and sitting in the basement a few times. When I was a young teacher in Success, Missouri (about 50 miles south of Rolla), we watched a tornado go swirling through about a mile from school. Seventeen miles away was Houston, MO, where I lived. When I got home, the neighbors told me that it had come by a quarter of a mile away and taken out a large storage building - but no damage to us. However, my best (?) tornado story is when I was 6, and we lived in Ash Grove, MO - close to Springfield. It was just after dark and my parents and I had been window shopping at a furniture store in Bois D'Arc. On the way home it was very windy, and suddenly, the car spun around in a 360-degree turn! Shaken, Dad drove home even more slowly. When we got inside, the news was full of the tornado that had swathed a path of destruction about 5 miles out of Bois D'Arc! I just thought the spin was fun, but now, of course, I look back and realize how hard our guardian angels were working that one!
P.S. Try Overstock.com, catalogfavorites.com, or naturesjewelry.com - they are more reasonable for things like jade charms. You could probably find an inexpensive one at a local jeweller's - jade is not horribly expensive. And - it's the new alternative August birthstone, too - good color in a peridot is getting to be expensive!
