Title: coat change
Post by: tpoof on July 02, 2007, 01:51:58 PM
Hello All   :sad1:
We may have a problem....

We seem to be having some sort of coat change going on with our boy Ceasar :dontknow:

Its been happening for some time now,,, we think.

It all started when we took him home and he was so itchy!!!
So we took him to the vet who said he had "bugs" and gave him some Revolution( a topical liquid absorbed by the skin)
We repeated this treatment in 3 weeks... He was itchy all the way thru... but maybe somewhat better,,maybe..
Got him some special shampoos to help they seemed to work a bit.., then it's almost like he's getting used to scratching and goes at it with a vengence sometimes,, :dontknow: something is still buggin him!!
Now after we have had him for 5 weeks his coat seems to be getting flecked or mottled? Its slowly getting more so...
Not sure if this is from the mites? (thats all I could come up with with a internet search) demodex I think... hope not!
Could it be that his coat is changing?  Do they get an adult coat? does it look so??, just seems weird to me.
Wondering if anyone has seen or dealt with such a malady??

All input would be welcomed!      got to help this little dude out!!

As a side note.
We went swimming to the lake today! Ceasar's first swim!! His coat looks fine when wet. no skin blemishes underneath or nothing!
At least that! :xfinger:

Thanks again....

Three years ago when we brought Winston home from purchasing him, we had to take him to the vet because he had skin mites.  We were given special shampoo that we had to treat him with ....  I believe three times....(it is so hard to remember).  He had them so bad it looked like he had "mange", he had spots where the hair was completely gone (people were staring at him at the vet's office).  I believe they also gave him a "shot" for the itching.  I do seem to remember his hair looking something like Ceasar's....but at that time I was just worried about whether his hair would grow back or not (to this day he has a small little patch on his tail that did not come back).  I am sorry but this is all I can recall.  Did the vet see his coat lately?

Thanks Cheryl for sharing your story..  :) Glad Winston tuffed it out!!
Ceasar doesn'tt have any bald spots at all,, the spotting is some darker fur it seems more red and black....
slowly this dappling/patchy not sure what the ----  it is, seems to be getting larger...
it just doesn't seem right is all  :thinik:

We'll have to take him in and see whats up... once again... :BangHead:

Study on the net suggests some sores to go with the skin problem but all seems well.....no sores ,,and glad of it

I'll keep you's all posted as to the ongoings..

Thanks again

How old is he? Hard to tell for sure but to me it just looks like he's blowing his puppy coat. (if he is a indeed a puppy!)

Thanks for the reply D !!!! :thumb:
He is indeed a pup now at 17weeks... this has been going on now for a month or so...
I think you're right about the puppy coat. He's just way too active and happy with such a shiny coat. It is changing,,getting darker, redder it seems..
We kind of thought that it might be something like that as our Standard Poodle did that when she was a youngin..
But you are the first to say that they do shed out of their puppy coat, good to hear.
Others that are avid Doxie owners reconfirmed the mottling/changing to adult coat.
Thanks again..
Ride the wave....

His first swim,, all by himself,,, so brave! :hello2:

Wow!!! The summers almost gone... its been a busy one for sure, but a good one.

Just got time to surf some and noticed my old post on Ceasars coat change..
I would like to give an update on this....

Well, at almost 6 months of age he did have a coat change.
All his light tan overcoat came out and slowly was replaced by the most beautiful shiny slippery red/copper coat.
The small spots showing in the first pics were of his new coat showing thru,,,
Everyone comments on his looks and feel, its hard to keep ones hands off him!!

His itching is almost over as well, he is going thru the teething stage now and has slowly lost most of his teeth, replaced by miniature sharks teeth it seems (he can sure shred toys fast now!!!) but he still carries his upperbaby canines along with his newer ones pushing out.. its got to bothered him but he can hardly be distradted  being so busy fighting off bears and such!!

Here is a snap of his new coat  and his triumph over the local targets that used to scare him :headbang:

I know Oliver is a long hair but we do see colour changes when he goes from winter to summer and viz versa. He goes dark then the newcoat comes in. Amy is so hairy you don't notice anything.

Ps he is a gorgeoius boy
