Title: Toby-Mans one week check up...not great.
Post by: TerriL on June 15, 2007, 07:00:38 PM
I am not dealing with this really well so I'll just let you know what is happening.  Toby evidently has a ridiculously large vein that runs down the side of his ear.  This is the vein that "blew out" (Dr. M's words) causing the aural hematoma.  He also told me that it is the largest vein he has ever seen in a dachsie ear.   He has been doing really well all week.  He has been crated ...Keith comes home for lunch so Toby gets to get out for about an hour and of course he is out and under supervision after I get home.
I thought the ear looked pretty flat, which is what we want but this morning the vein must have started leaking again because the very tip of the ear..at the bottom is swollen again.  Dr. M. had to drain it again and put a few more stiches and plastic tubes through the bottom of the ear.  He told me that this happens sometimes..and the fact that the vein is so large and had such a big blow out didn't help.  Bottom line is that we have to go back on tuesday.  If the vein has not closed itself and continues to bleed he will have to operate again.  NOT what we want right now.  The only good thing is that the upper part of the ear seems to be healing well and reconnecting nicely with the cartiledge.
Toby is tired of this and my heart is just breaking for him.  He just shook at Dr. M's today and he never does that.  Right now he is attached at my hip and he wouldn't eat his dinner.  I am frustrated and I don't understand why he has to go through all of this.  Sorry if I'm being a terrible downer but this really sucks.  No other way to put it.
Just wanted to let you all know what's happening.  Thanks for listening everyone.

I'm so sorry this is dragging out for you guys. I can only imagine the frustration. At least SOME progress has been made - the top of his ear is healing well and because of that, it's only a matter of time before the vet gets a handle on the bottom of it. I know it's hard for you to see that side of the situation, but that's how I always cope - "How can this be worse? OK, that's not happening, I can deal with this."

Don't ever apologize for being a downer. That's what this board is here for (Right, Kari and Drew?). Most of the population does not care for their furkids as we do, so this is one of the few places we can cry, laugh and brag about them without fear of being laughed at or put down for it. If we don't have each other for this, we have no one.

I feel so badly for our Toby-Man and for you.  I know you want so badly for him to be all better.  Sending doxie rays and prayers that the outlook on Tuesday is better.   Don't ever apologize......we are here to help and support each other.  We all understand how hard it is to see our puppers in pain or ailing.  Maybe some scrambled eggs to help get something in his tummy?  Please keep us posted....

Sending soft smoochies to Toby - Man and big hugs to his mom.....
