We buried Sassy yesterday. We picked a nice shady spot in the trees for her. The vet came out to our place. We walked Sassy to her spot. The vet first gave Sassy a sedative, and she immediately got real sleepy. Then the vet gave her the other shot. Sassy went down very gently within a minute, and she was gone. There wasn't any twitching or additional breathing or anything. It was so quick and peaceful, and I am very thankful for that. I got to hug her and tell her I loved her before she went. She got lots of cookies earlier in the day, too. The vet said she backed our decision 100%, that we were doing the right thing. It really helped to hear that because at times like this, when we have to make "the decision", we tend to doubt ourselves. Sassy is free of pain now and running free.

Neeki and Sassy
I'm so sorry you had to make this decision but it sounds like you did the best thing for Sassy! You are in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this though time! :comfort:
Oh Patty - she sure was beautiful......such a pretty face. You DID do the right thing - because you did it for her. She is running pain free at the Bridge. Hugs to you and Dan - you have had to endure too much lately -
I'm so sorry for your loss, Patty. You really did give Sassy the last best gift before she departed. Best wishes.
I am sorry for your loss- what a beautiful horse! You did make the best decision, which is so hard, but it is so selfless. :comfort:
We knew this was coming but we are still very sorry to hear it. You know you made the right choice and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sending HHHH's :comfort: & PPPPPP's  to you.

R.I.P., Sassy - now you can find Domingo and have chases and races at the Bridge. I knew it was coming, but I had to wait a few minutes before clicking on this post.
Oh Patty, I'm so sorry for your loss. I love that picture of Sassy and Neeki. So sweet and gentle! My heart goes out to you and Dan. What a painful but selfless decision we all have to make at some point. You're in my prayers.
Even though I knew you would have to do this in the summer, I knew losing Missy would make it even harder. I know you did the right thing for Sassy and I'm glad the vet reassured you. The best thing is you will have Neeki around to keep Sassy's memory alive for you. That is one of the best gifts she could have given you.
Ohhh Patty my heart is breaking for you all over again. This is one reason why I don't want a bunch of animals, you always seem to be losing someone. It's so hard. Sassy was a gorgeous mare, does Neeki seem to miss her or had they cut the apron strings by now pretty much? My thoughts and prayers are with you and Dan.
She was a beautiful girl, Patty. I'm sure if Sassy could thank you herself, she would. It sounds like you had no other choice. Living in pain is just no way to live.

Neeki and Patch saw us lead Sassy out of the corral, and they were calling for her. Since Sassy didn't come back, they continued to call for her for a couple hours after she was gone. By evening they had calmed down. I think the two girls will be okay. I'm glad they have each other, and their two elderly uncles, Jasper and Hondo.
Patty & Dan~ Sooo very sorry about Sassy.... You did do the right thing for her... But, that doesn't make it any easier... I couldn't open this for a few minutes... Had to shed some tears for you first.... :comfort: We will be thinking of you all and praying that you find comfort.... She was a very beautiful girl... And, I am sure she loved you very much, and is very understanding and thankful in your decision... *hugs* Love & Prayers coming your way from Idaho...
My heart goes out to you both. Sassy will always be half there in Neeki, and will keepa mums eye over her.
Hugs Roberta
You absolutely did the right thing with Sassy. I know it hurts now, but knowing that you unquestionably did the right thing will help you find peace. Sending rays and prayers your way.
sending rays and prayers for you!!
You're in our thoughts and prayers. God-Speed, Sassy
What a lovely lady. Sending a very large hug to you today.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
It is hard to do but your vet would not have told you it was the right thing to do or nor would he have done it if he did not know abut the horse being in pain. That is the trouble with our Fur Kids to show pain means you are weak and will be food for some stronger animal. It is the way of the wild which is still ingrained into our animals brains. They can't help it that is the way they are made now Sassy is free to run and not be in pain any more it takes a person with a stron love fot their Fur Kid to let them go on to the other side. You have a big heart and love your Fur kids.It is a sad time but you know you did the right thing by Sassy.
